A Detailed Lesson Plan in General Physics 1

I. Preliminaries

a. Title of the Lesson: First of Law of Thermodynamics

b. Content Standard: The learners demonstrate an understanding of

internal energy of an ideal gas, heat capacity of an ideal gas,
thermodynamics system and work done during volume changes, 1 st law
of Thermodynamics processes: Adiabatic, Isothermal, isobaric,
Isochoric.

c. Learning Competency: State the relationship between changes

internal energy, work done, and thermal energy supplied through the
first law of thermodynamics STEM_GP12 GLT-llh-62

d. Learning Objectives:
At the end of 60 minutes discussion, 89% of the student should be
able to:

a. Explain the First Law of Thermodynamics

b. Illustrate the relationship between changes internal energy, work
done, and thermal energy through the first law of
thermodynamics.
c. Cite some real life application of the First Law of
Thermodynamics in some daily events involving work, heat and
internal energy

e. Scientific Skills to be Developed

 Inferring, observing and communicating

f. Key Concepts
 The first law of thermodynamics is simply a statement of
conservation of energy principle and it asserts that total energy is
a thermodynamic property. Energy can neither be created nor
destroyed; it can only change forms.
 Internal energy is the sum of the kinetic and potential energies of
a system’s atoms and molecules.
 Work Transfer is defined as a product of the force and the
distance moved in the direction of the force. When a boundary of
a close system moves in the direction of the force acting on it,
then the system does work on its surroundings. When the
boundary is moved inwards the work is done on the system by its
surroundings

g. Materials

Bucket, plastic bottle, and balloon, cartolina, marker, worksheets,

Powerpoint presentation, Smart TV.

II. Lesson Development (Plan Lesson Delivery)

Engage
Present an image of a light bulb, plant under the sunlight, kids riding a
bicycle eating an ice cream.
Ask: What do you observe at the picture? Have you ever wondered how plants
could grow without literally eating food like us? Or why do we sweat after our biking
exercise while we are eating? Or How come that electricity can light up and brighten
your home? What energy transformation takes place in each picture?

Explore
Have students group into 2, and let them do the activity by using a
bucket, plastic bottle, and balloon. Guide each group to proceed on
conducting experiment:
1. Boil the water with the help of electric kettle.
2. Pour the boiling water into bucket where the bottle has
been already placed with it’s neck covered with non
inflated balloon.
3. Wait for few minutes to see the result. Make sure to
supervise the temperature.
Safety Precautions:
 Make sure use a right equipment
 Beware with the hot surface
 Always work in a well-ventilated area.
 Wash your hand with soap and water after performing all experiments.

Explain
Student will present to the class and explain the content of their
activity. The students explanation should touch the relationship between
changes of internal energy, work done and heat. Then the teacher will correct
the misconception of the topic throughout the discussion.

Elaborate
The teacher will distribute the handouts to each group which
contains some real life application of the first law of thermodynamics and
afterwards have them make a graphic organizer on the information written.
Students should learn and understand the application of the first law of
thermodynamics in some daily events involving work done, heat and internal
energy.

Evaluate

To assess student understanding of first law of thermodynamics they will be

given an essay test equivalent to 20 points such as, What is the First Law of
Thermodynamics? Explain.,What is the relationship between changes internal
energy, work done, and thermal energy through the first law of
thermodynamics?. This will summarize to what the students have learned
throughout the discussion.
