MATTER

Anything that has mass

and takes up space.
Made up of small
particles called atom.

STATES OF MATTER
Solid
Particles in a solid are tightly packed
usually in a regular pattern.
Particles in a solid will vibrate but
cannot move past each other
Solid retains their shapes
Liquid
Particles in a liquid are close
together with no regular pattern
Particles in a liquid flow and can
easily move or slide past one
another
Liquids assume the shapes of their
container

Gases
Particles in a gas are well separated
with no regular pattern
Particles in a gas vibrate move freely
with high speeds
Gases assume the shape of their
container

Solid Melting Freezing

Liquid Vaporization
Condensation
Gas Ionization
Deionization Plasma

PROPERTIES OF MATTER
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
characteristics that can be observed
or measured
Don't involve changes in
composition

EXAMPLE:
Texture
Mass
Volume
Density
Solubility
CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
ability or inability of a substance to
combine with another substance or
change into a new substance

EXAMPLE:
Reactivity
Instability
Toxicity
pH
Flammability
