Activity # 01
Sound Waves

I. Introduction:
Every kind of sound is produced by vibration. Whatever it is, some part of it is vibrating while
it is producing sound. The vibrations from the source disturb the air in such a way that sound waves
are produced. These waves travel out in all directions, expanding in balloon-like fashion from the
source of the sound. If the waves happen to reach someone's ear, they set up vibrations that are
perceived as sound. Sound, then, depends on three things. There must be a vibrating source to set
up sound waves, a medium (such as air) to carry the waves, and a receiver to detect them. Sound
waves cannot travel through a vacuum.

II. Objectives:
At the end of this activity, the students will be able to:
a. compute for the frequency, wavelength and speed of sound waves, and
b. explain the features and speed of sound waves

III. Materials:
Scientific Calculator
Physics e-books

IV. Procedure:
A. Completion
Direction: Complete the following table that shows the frequency and wavelength of
sound in aluminum.

Frequency (Hz) Wavelength (m) Speed (m/s)

5,100 1 5,100 m/s

4200 2 8,400 m/s

1,000 5 5,000 m/s

2,000 7 14,000 m/s

B. Problem Solving:
Direction: Answer each problem completely and comprehensively.

1. A wave travelling 80 m/s has a wavelength of 3.2 m. What is the frequency of the wave?

2. Sound waves travel at approximately 340 m/s. What is the wavelength of a sound with a
frequency of 20 Hz (the lowest note we can hear
as a sound)?

frequency of 20 kHz (the highest note we
can hear)?

3. A

sound pulse emitted underwater

reflects off a school of fish and is
detected at the same place 0.01 s later.
How far away are the fish?

VI. Enrichment:
1. Light can travel through a vacuum, as evidenced when you see the sun or the
moon. Can sound travel through a vacuum also? Explain why or why not.

Absolutely no, sound will not be able to travel a vacuum because a vacuum
is necessary for it to do so, and it cannot also travel because the vacuum of
space has no or has just a few particles to vibrate that can sound be able to
travel.

2. When watching a baseball game, we often hear the bat hitting the ball after we
actually see the hit. Why?

When we are watching a baseball game, we often just hear the bat hitting
the ball after we actually see the hit, it is because light travel faster than sound..

3. Why will marchers at the end of a long parade following a band be out of step
with marchers nearer the band?

This is because sound travel so slow since the sound is far from them to
hear it. This needs a lot of time to travel so the marchers in the end of the long
parade will be out of step then the marchers nearer the end. Thus, the marchers
have to step out on the delayed beat they hear.
