Chernobyl: Review of the Disaster

Introduction
It as was a beautiful chaos equivalent to death. A truth hidden from lies. A night were people seem to
be blissful of what the scene has to offer. On April 26, 1986 where the Number 4 RBMK reactor at
Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine exploded during a safety test which followed by an intense
fire that tears down the reactor building and let out a huge amount of radiation into the atmosphere. This
has all started in the control room were supremacy takes in action in every order and command of the
Deputy Chief Engineer named Anatoly Dyatlov under with his power are a 25 year old Senior reactor
Control Chief Engineer Leonid Toptunov and the Unit Shift Chief Akimov where one is lacking of
experience but knows it was all wrong from the start. They have diverge their selves in and did
everything to the point Toptunov press the AZ-5 button top shutdown the reactor as per of the command
of Dyatlov and then bam later did they know the core exploded.
Main Paragraph
Nuclear reactor is the heart of a power plant. It is the source of the intense heat which is in turn used
for generation of power in nuclear power station. It’s mechanism is similar to that of a furnace in a steam
generator, the steam is used to drive the turbines of the electric generator system. A nuclear reactor
consists of a three critical components which are the fuel elements that contains fissionable nuclei
Uranium 235, a moderator commonly an ordinary or heavy water that slows down the energy neutrons
in a nuclear reactor and the third the control rods which controls the fission chain reactions and absorb
any excess or spare neutrons in the moderator to prevent further reactions.
Professor Legasov together with Soviet Nuclear Physicists Khomyuk had leave an impact for me.
They take upon their roles in their profession as scientists. Their commendable acts are already
imprinted on every people’s lives as they prove that science both handle truth and responsibilities to the
public. They have inculcated that you don’t need to be a scientist to understand the situation. They have
lived their profession outstandingly and with that I think there’s none of their action needed to be modify.
The chernobyl fallout had caused a major impact on humans, plants, animals and the environment in
Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. Radionuclides were taken up by all living things and made an adverse
effects from heavy exposure such radiation sickness Acute Radiation Syndrome (ARS), cataracts and
late effects such as thyroid cancer in child and adolescent. The explosion had also leave psychosocial

or mental effects. The plants and animals also suffer from the explosion such reproductive losses and
acute radiation especially those in the inclusion zone. The environment were highly contaminated such
as the atmosphere and water which contains radioactive elements.
Conclusion
The people and its environment are always the vulnerable ones when such nuclear explosion
phenomenon happens. It’s damage should be realized and considered to prevent making the same
mistakes. In terms of Bataan Nuclear Power Plant called as the sleeping giant the commission had
currently stated that the nuclear power plant had inadequate safeguards and could be a potential
hazards to the health of the public. There are also many defects in construction and design including
unassured storage of nuclear waste and the BNPP’s technology of the plant was absolutely outdated.
Definitely with the fact stated I don’t agree on making the power plant operational if it would mean losing
again some lives. But if there reasons be justified and modified through ensuring the safety of the public
then absolutely I will forego on making power plant operational because I believe that there’s no such
thing worthy of someone’s life.
