Ch.1 Looking Back

Topic : Number Line and Patterns

THE NUMBER LINE

Numbers can be shown on a line. Such a line is called a number line.

(Pl. note the following sums have to be solved using numbers 0 to 10 on a number
line as shown below).

17.04.2020 Ch.1 (Number Line)

(Instruction : The number which is mentioned first has to be considered first and the
solution has to found out. For example : The butterfly is on 2, place the cursor on 2
and 3 greater than 2 the cursor has to be moved forward with 3 jumps and you will
get the answer. For less you have to move backwards considering the first number,
and it is always when you have more you can give i.e. from a big number
subtraction takes place.)

A. Draw the number line showing 0 to 10 numbers and answer the following :-

a. If the butterfly is on 2 and it sits on 3 greater than 2 which number it will be on

_______.

b. If a rabbit is on 7 and it hops to 2 less than 7 which number it will be on ______.

c. 3 + 5 =

d. 5 + 3 =

e. 1 – 1 =

f. 5 – 3 =
(Note : This is for reference only. Missing numbers, add or subtract can be used on

number line from 0 to 20 or 0 to 100.)

i. Missing numbers on the number line.

17.04.2020 Ch.1 (Patterns)

B. Write the next term in the pattern. One has been done for you.

1. 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 .

2. 39, 38, 37, 36, ______.

3. 15, 18, 21, 24, ______.

4. 12, 21, 13, 31, 14, _____.

5. A, AAB, AAAC, _______.

6. , , , , , _______.

(Note : There is a whole chapter this year also. But as the children have learnt last
year the sums are given in Ch.1. the pattern may be formed by skipping 1 or 2
numbers, or mirror image of numbers can be given.

To find the pattern between numbers,

Step 1 : Always see first the sequence whether it is increasing(ascending) or

decreasing (descending).

Step 2 : Take 2 numbers which are next to each other in Ex.1. : 7 and 9.

Step 3 : We know it is increasing and by how many numbers (9 – 7 = 2). Hence, the
next number 9 is written. So, after 9 it is + 2. Hence 11 in the pattern.

(*Whether it is increasing or decreasing pattern to find by how many numbers the

pattern is formed you have to always subtract the two numbers which are next to
each other given in the sequence. Also, it is known as skip counting.)
