Fastener Types: Extracted from ASME B18.

12-2001 Glossary of Terms for Mechanical Fasteners

Externally Threaded Products

BOLT: an externally threaded product designed for insertion through holes in assemblies to mate with a nut and
normally intended to be tightened or released by turning that nut.

The only bolt that has a washer face is the heavy hex structural bolt.

HEXAGON HEAD BOLT: has a hexagon shaped head for external wrenching that is intended to resist bolt rotation
while it is being tightened up with a nut.

CAP SCREW: a screw with a closely controlled body diameter, a washer faced bearing surface, and a flat chamfered
point that facilitate its installation into tapped holes. Cap screws usually have hexagon, splined socket, hexagon socket,
button, flat, fillister, or round head styles.

TAP BOLT: a square or hexagon head machine bolt, threaded relatively close to the head.
DOUBLE END STUD: has equal length threads on each end to accommodate a nut and is threaded to class 2A or class
6g. Length of stud is measured overall.

INTERFERENCE-THREAD DOUBLE END STUD

(TAPEND STUD): similar to double-end studs, except that one end has a class NC5 or class UNC-3A thread (for
metric coarse threads with class 6g tolerances). This type of stud is designed to be installed in a tapped hole.

STUDBOLT
(CONTINUOUS THREAD STUD): threaded from end to end and is often used for flange bolting with two nuts
applied.

(a) Type 1: General Purpose Studs. The length of this type of stud is measured from end to end.
Threads are UNC-2A or class 6g.

(b) Type 2: Studs for Temperature–Pressure Piping. These studs are made to the dimensional standard
requirements of ANSI/ASME B16.5 and have a length that is measured from first thread to first thread,
excluding both point lengths.
