HMA mixture design using Marshal method

Example 2:
The result of a marshal test for five specimen with different Asphalt content is
given below, find the optimal asphalt content for the mix using
Asphalt Inistitute Method.

Bitumen Stablity Flow Vv (%) VFA (%) Gm

content (Kg) (unit)
3 499.4 9 12.5 34 2.17
4 717.3 9.6 7.2 65 2.21
5 812.7 12 3.9 84 2.26
6 767.3 14.8 2.4 91 2.23
7 662.8 19.5 1.9 93 2.18

Solution

Bitumen Stablity Flow

content (Kg) (unit) Vv (%) VFA (%) Gm
3 499.4 9 12.5 34 2.17
4 717.3 9.6 7.2 65 2.21
5 812.7 12 3.9 84 2.26
6 767.3 14.8 2.4 91 2.23
7 662.8 19.5 1.9 93 2.18

Step 1: Plote the results against Asphalt Content

Asphalt Content

Step 2: Using Asphalt Institute Procedure, let us to determine the three asphalt contents

A) The asphalt content corrosponding to Maximum Stablity is equal to 5%

B) The asphalt content corrosponding to Maximum Density is equal to 5%

C) The asphalt content corrosponding 4% Air void is equal to 4.80%

Averaged Asphalt content 4.93%

Step 3: The corrosponding stability, flow and Air void to the averaged Asphalt content are :

A) The Stablity corrosponding to 4.93 % Asphalt content is equal to 790

B) The flow corrosponding to 4.93 % Asphalt content is equal to 11

C) The Air Void corrosponding to 4.93 % Asphalt content is equal to 3.95%

Step 4: Check the above values are with in the range of the specification requirment

B : For our case as the example is arbitrary and we don’t have the criterias let assume
the requirments are within the specification requirment and hence,

Recommendation: Use 4.93% Asphalt cement
