CHAPTER 7
THE POWER OF THE MIND: WHOLE BRAIN THEORY

 DR. ROGER SPERRY – explained that the brain has two hemispheres that perform tasks differently from
each other.
 Left hemisphere – intuitive, creative, and synthesizing.
 Right Hemisphere – analytical, logical, reasoning, and critical thinking.

 DR. PAUL MACLEAN – he identified three distinct parts of the brain.

 Neocortex – (rational brain) responsible for intellectual tasks such as language, planning,
abstraction, and perception.
 Limbic System – (intermediate brain) responsible for the motivation and emotion involved in
feeding, reproductive behavior, and parental behavior.
 Reptilian Complex – (primitive brain) controls the self-reservation and aggressive behavior of
humans similar to the survival instincts of animals.

 Right-handed Person – have a weaker left hand.

 Left-handed Person – have a weaker right hand.

 NED HERRMANN – Father of Brain Dominance Technology.

Herrmann labeled the four quadrants of the brain
Thinking as:
Processes
1. Upper Left (A) Cerebral Mode – key word for this quadrant is ANALYTICAL
2. Lower Left (B) Limbic Mode – key word for this quadrant is ORGANIZED
3. Lower Right (C) Limbic Mode - key word for this quadrant is INTERPERSONAL
4. Upper Right (D) Limbic System - key word for this quadrant is IMAGINATIVE

CHAPTER 8
MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING IN MIDDLE AND LATE ADOLECENCE

 The World Health Organization (WHO) – enumerated the following six factors or aspects of mental
health and well-being.

5 Steps in Improving Mental Health

1. Connect – with the people around you: your family, friends, classmates, schoolmates, and neighbors.

and new confidence.
4. Give to Others – giving to others is not limited to money or other material things.
5. Take Notice – be in the here and now, be in the present moment, be aware of what is happening
around you.

CHAPTER 9
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

 DANIEL GOLEMAN – writer of Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ (1995).
– popularized emotional intelligence.
 DR. JOSEPH LEDOUX – the AMYGDALA has become the center of action, the emotional sentinel that
take control of our actions even before the neocortex could assess what to do.
 HOWARD GARDNER – theorized the seven types of intelligences became known as “MULTIPLE
INTELLIGENCE”.

7 Types of Multiple Intelligence

1. Verbal-Linguistic
2. Mathematical-Logical
3. Spatial
4. Kinesthetic
5. Musical
6. Interpersonal
7. Intrapersonal

5 Domains of Emotional Intelligence

1. Self-awareness
