WEEK 7
Name: Date:
Activity No.7
Topic: Enhancing the Powers of the Mind Score:
Content Standard: The learner demonstrates the understanding of:
The whole brain theory, or two hemispheres of the brain: artistic (right-brain dominant) and linear (left-brain
dominant)
Performance Standards: The learner is able to
Identify ways to improve learning using both left and right brain.
Learning Competency: The learner:
1. Discuss that understanding the left and right brain may help in improving one’s learning.
References: PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT – Discovering the Key to Success; Pages 65-68
DISCUSSION:

Human Brain- is a complex organ that weighs about 3 pounds.

1. Cerebrum
2. Cerebellum
3. Spinal cord

3 Essential Parts of the Brain

1.Forebrain – it is accountable for emotions, memories, and “higher-order” pursuit such as thinking and reasoning.

Forebrain consists of the:

● Thalamus
- found between the cerebral cortex & midbrain & just above the brain stem.
- Part of the brain that controls the voluntary bodily movements.
● Hypothalamus
- it functions mainly to produce hormones that govern body temperature, thirst, hunger, sleep, moods & sex drive.

2. Midbrain
– found at the topmost part of the brain. Considered as the smallest region of the brain, it has something to do
with hearing and the movement of the eye.

3. Hindbrain
– Found at the upper portion of the spinal cord is the hindbrain, which comprises the brain stem and the
cerebellum.

Cerebrum - contains the cerebral cortex & is the largest segment of the brain.

4 Types of Lobe
● Frontal Lobe – it collects information signals coming from the other section of the brain.

● Parietal Lobe – found in the middle part of the brain, it processes sensory information such as taste,
warmth, cold, pressure, pain and the body’s position in space.
● Temporal Lobe – lower part of the brain, it performs several functions pertaining to speech, perception,
and some types of memory.
● Occipital Lobe – Rear portion of the brain, it processes sensory information from the retina of the eye. It
interprets visual stimuli and information.

1. Midbrain – found at the topmost part of the brain. Considered as the smallest region of the brain, it has
something to do with hearing and the movement of the eye.

2. Hindbrain – Found at the upper portion of the spinal cord is the hindbrain, which comprises the brain stem and
the cerebellum.

2 Hemisphere of the Brain

Right Hemisphere - is in charge of the creative activities of the brain. It is oftentimes called the creative side of
the brain. This part of the brain focuses on anything visual.

Left Hemisphere - accounts for the logical or analytical activities more logically or sequentially. It governs
comprehension and the use of language, including paying attention, interpretation, speaking, reading, and writing.

The Hemisphere of the Brain

Left Hemisphere Brain Functions Right Hemisphere Brain Functions

● Analytic Thought ● Art awareness

● Logic ● Creativity

● Language ● Imagination

● Reasoning ● Intuition

● Science & Math ● Insight

● Written ● Holistic Thought

● Number Skills ● Music Awareness

● Right hand control ● 3D Forms

● Left hand control

Learning Activity 7:

List down your daily activity in school or home at least give (5 to 10 examples). Try to classify those
activities in relation to which side of the brain is used, whether it be right hemisphere or left hemisphere.
Identify whether your left-brain or right-brain dominant.

Closing Questions:

1. What particular part of the brain is responsible for emotions? What happens when this part of the brain gets
damaged?

2. What are the four (4) types of lobes and identify what are the functions in our brain.
