POWERS OF THE MIND

Central Nervous System – consists of the brain and the spinal cord (very important)
The Brain
 In charge with the response or actions of an individual after processing the information
 It is like CPU and memory of a computer
 Average weight is 3lbs or 1350 grams
 Has a jelly-like consistency
 Protected by the skull
 THE HEMISPHERES OF THE BRAIN
LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS:
 Logic  Rational thought
 Analytical thought  Verbal cautious
 Math/Science  Planning
 Detail Oriented Perception  Right Field Vision
 Ordered sequencing  Right Side Motor Skills

RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS (Artistic)

 Creativity  Nonverbal communication
 Imagination  Feelings
 Holistic thinking  Visual sensation
 Intuition  Tune of songs
 Arts  Daydreaming
 Rhythm

ACTIVITIES THAT CAN ENHANCE THE RIGHT BRAIN AND THE LEFT BRAIN
LEFT BRAIN ENHANCEMENT ACTIVITIES
1. Puzzles – Making time to solve puzzles. Such as rubrics cube, sudoku and other puzzle
related activities can stimulate the left brain to be logical and analytic.
2. Taking Advance Courses in Mathematics – Several institutions are focusing on teaching
children on mathematical techniques which also help the individual to be analytic in solving
math equation.
3. Reading books – Being a wide reader can help an individual to develop his or her vocabulary.
4. Declaiming or Public Speaking – These are example of activities can also enhance the left
brain because the language proficiency of the individual can be developed.
RIGHT BRAIN ENHANCEMENT ACTIVITIES:
1. Dancing – The right brain is in-charge with rhythm; therefore, dancing can enhance the right
brain through body movements that is in line with the beat of the music.
2. Painting or Crafting – When a person is doing arts, his or her right brain is stimulated.
3. Playing instrument – Playing any musical instrument can stimulate our right brain.
THE 4 PARTS OF THE HEMISPHERES
1. Frontal Lobe (Nahahawakan natin simula noo hanggang tuktok)
 Located in the front and top of the brain.
 Its functions include:
Higher mental processes
Decision making
Recognition (pagkilala)
Formulation of speech
Voluntary Motor Movements
2. Temporal Lobe
 Areas of the cerebral cortex located just behind the temples.
 Containing the neurons responsible for the sense of hearing and meaningful speech.
 It is also responsible for explicit memory.
3. Occipital Lobe
 It is the area of the brain that is located at the rear bottom of each cerebral hemisphere
containing the visual centers of the brain.
4. Parietal Lobe
 Part of the brain that is located at the top and back of each cerebral hemisphere.
 It controls touch, taste and temperature sensations.
NEUROTRANSMITTERS – chemicals that carry messages across the synapse or cell body of a
receiving neuron
ENDOCRINE GLAND
 Produces chemicals called hormones.
 These hormones are secreted directly into the bloodstream and influence the activities and
functions of the muscles and organs and different glands.
 Over secretion or under secretion of the glands may lead to certain conditions that affects the
body.
PITUITARY GLAND
 Found in the brain just below the hypothalamus.
 It secretes of growth hormone and other important hormones.
 It is referred to as the master gland because it influences the activity of the other glands.
 Master gland
PINEAL GLAND
 Also located in the brain.
 It secretes melatonin – a hormone that regulates the sleep wake cycle in response to changes
in light
THYROID GLANDS
 Located inside the neck.
 It controls metabolism (the burning of energy) by secreting thyroxin
PANCREAS
 Controls the level of sugar in the blood by secreting insulin and glucagon
 Hyperglycemia too much
 Too much insulin produces hypoglycemia, whereas too little cause diabetes
ADRENAL GLANDS
 Can be found on topmost part of the kidneys.
 It controls the stress reaction through the adrenal medulla’s secretion of epinephrine and
norepinephrine
 The adrenal cortex secretes over 30 different corticoids (hormones) controlling salt intake,
stress, and sexual development
GONADS
 Ovaries in women
 Testes in men
 They secrete hormones to regulate sexual growth, activity, and reproduction
 To Support reproduction itself

Estrogen – Female sex hormones

Serotonin – nakakatulong sa pagtulog
Mastication – pagdurog ng pagkain (first step until sa thyroid gland)
Epinephrine – To improve your breath, mapataas yung blood pressure
Nor norepinephrine – Upang bumaba ang pressure
