Name of Tutor: Saad Burbank

Pupil Name: Daniel Pittaway

Pupil DOB:

Name of Principal Officer:

Week Commencing: 04/11/2019

Date of session: 04/11/2019

Learning Objectives: To practice the 6 times table and increase in fluency. To introduce Roman
numerals and use them to write four-digit numbers. To learn about the various types of energy
(light, heat, movement, electrical and sound). To categorize everyday objects into conductors and
insulators.

Learning Outcomes: Although Daniel does know his 6 times table, his fluency was lacking. Daniel is
now able to recall the 6 times table at an almost fluent level. At the start of the session, Daniel
answered 10 questions on the 6 times table in 1:45, whereas by the end, he was able to answer the
same questions in just over half a minute. Daniel formed a system whereby he was able to recall all
the roman numerals. He does, however, need reminding regarding whether to add or subtract (if a
smaller numeral appears before a larger one). Daniel understands where electricity comes from and
how it is converted into other forms of energy. He is able to identify the energy conversions for
various household appliances and can even differentiate between useful and wasted energy. Daniel
knows what a conductor is and correctly categorised some everyday objects by their conductive or
insulative nature.

Additional Information: What is going well? Focus Area? Student interests, observations?

Daniel began the session being rather demotivated, but soon brightened up after a few games of
noughts and crosses on the whiteboard. He also enjoyed using it for Maths to practice his times
tables and for calculating the value of long Roman numerals.

Behaviour and Engagement:

1: No interest or engagement.

2: Some interest and engagement at times.

3: Good engagement but inconsistent.

4: Very good engagement; keen to succeed.

5: Highly motivated and fully engaged.

Date of session: 05/11/2019

Learning Objectives: To practice adding and subtracting negative numbers and finding the range
between them. To be able to identify and use determiners and their functions correctly (a/an, the
etc).

Learning Outcomes: Daniel is now able to work out the range between positive and negative
numbers independently. He still uses a number line for some two-digit calculations and is
encouraged to do so when checking his answers to consolidate understanding. Daniel knows the
three functions of determiners and can identify them in sentences and construct sentences of his
own using appropriate determiners. He understood the difference in usage between a/an, even with
the exception of 'u' words that sound like consonants (a uniform/university as opposed to an).

Additional Information: What is going well? Focus Area? Student interests, observations?

Daniel did not seem to engage very well for the first part of the session (approximately an hour) - he
returned slightly late from his dad's and had not had any breakfast before he arrived. Throughout
the session, he became livelier and perked up. He is always courteous and kind, even when he feels
upset or angry.

Behaviour and Engagement:

1: No interest or engagement.

2: Some interest and engagement at times.

3: Good engagement but inconsistent.

4: Very good engagement; keen to succeed.

5: Highly motivated and fully engaged.

Learning Objectives: To be able to identify, partition and arrange decimals in size order. To learn
about adjectives, their relation to nouns and be able to use suitable adjectives in sentences.

Learning Outcomes: Daniel knew that a decimal was part of a whole, however ordering them was
something new to him. By the end of the session, he was able to order decimals to three decimal
places by use of a multi-step method (first writing the decimals in a table, then filling in the missing
zeros, then looking at each of the place values in turn: ones, tenths, hundredths, thousandths).
Daniel has a very good recollection of previous topics covered, which I further reinforce with quick
reviews of previous lessons. He remembered the other members of the 'noun family' (nouns,
pronouns, determiners) and was able to provide suitable examples for each. Together, we built upon
this by introducing another 'member' to the 'noun family', adjectives. Daniel grasped adjectives very
quickly and answered all of the related SATS questions correctly.

Additional Information: What is going well? Focus Area? Student interests, observations?

Daniel was very positive and motivated today, from the beginning to the end of the session. He
seemed happy and upbeat throughout and this was reflected in the quality of his answers and work.
His mother always asks how the session went and is interested in what he is learning.

Behaviour and Engagement:

1: No interest or engagement.

2: Some interest and engagement at times.

3: Good engagement but inconsistent.

4: Very good engagement; keen to succeed.

5: Highly motivated and fully engaged.

Learning Objectives: To learn how to round whole numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand,
ten thousand, hundred thousand and million. To learn what a verb is and be able to use verbs
correctly in sentences according to all three tenses (past, present and future).

Learning Outcomes: Daniel now knows how to round 7-digit numbers with confidence. He can
answer rounding questions independently and makes no mistakes. In the second part of the session,
we looked at verbs in English and their function in sentences (subject-verb-object). I also introduced
the three tenses which Daniel picked up quickly on. He knew the different forms of each verb for
most of the questions but had to be corrected with a few irregular verb forms (past tense of 'to do'
as did instead of 'done'). Daniel is able to construct a sentence using a noun, adjective, determiner,
pronoun and verb. He can identify the function of these words in a sentence too.

Additional Information: What is going well? Focus Area? Student interests, observations?

Daniel was focused and motivated in today's session. He completed all his tasks in a timely manner,
and I gave him a maze to solve at the end, which he completed very quickly and impressed me with.
Daniel enjoys problem solving and does not give up easily.

Behaviour and Engagement:

1: No interest or engagement.

2: Some interest and engagement at times.

3: Good engagement but inconsistent.

4: Very good engagement; keen to succeed.

5: Highly motivated and fully engaged.

Learning Objectives: To round decimals to 1, 2 and 3 decimal places. To recap all of the topics
studied in maths so far with assessment-style questions. To read the text on Stephen Hawking and
answer the accompanying questions.

Learning Outcomes: In today's session, Daniel learnt what decimal places were and how to round
decimals to the correct number of decimal places. He knows the difference between rounding
decimals and rounding whole numbers. During the second part of the session, we read a text on
Steven Hawking and answered the related questions. Daniel's understanding is excellent, although
he has to be reminded to ensure he uses correct punctuation (capital letters and full stops in
particular). He is able to spot his own mistakes and can correct them accordingly.

Additional Information: What is going well? Focus Area? Student interests, observations?

Daniel was a little emotional at the beginning of the session, however after his mother spoke to him
for around 5 minutes, he was motivated and applied himself fully. Daniel has an excellent reading
voice and can read emotively. Marley, Daniel's therapy dog, continues to be a source of comfort and
calm for him.

Behaviour and Engagement:

1: No interest or engagement.

2: Some interest and engagement at times.

3: Good engagement but inconsistent.

4: Very good engagement; keen to succeed.

5: Highly motivated and fully engaged.

Learning Objectives: To be able to perform addition of five-digit numbers using the column method.
To practice the addition of decimals using the column method. To learn about the past and present
progressive tense using was and am, respectively. To practice irregular verbs and be able to use
them in writing correctly.

Learning Outcomes: Daniel can perform addition using the column method with confidence. He has
no trouble adding whole numbers and quickly picked up on the addition of decimals, however he
sometimes forgets to write the decimal point which loses him marks. In English, we expanded upon
what was covered in the last session (simple past/present verbs) by introducing the past/present
progressive. Daniel is able to correctly identify the tenses but struggles with some irregular verbs
(e.g. go/went). He occasionally forgets punctuation but is showing a definite improvement as I need
to remind him much less regarding this as of recent.

Additional Information: What is going well? Focus Area? Student interests, observations?

Daniel was upbeat and had a remarkably positive attitude today. He thoroughly enjoyed the session
and remained focussed, meaning we were able to practice some revision in the form of quickfire
questions.

Behaviour and Engagement:

1: No interest or engagement.

2: Some interest and engagement at times.

3: Good engagement but inconsistent.

4: Very good engagement; keen to succeed.

5: Highly motivated and fully engaged.

Learning Objectives: To practice emotive reading. To be able to perform subtraction of 4/5-digit

numbers and decimals using the column method. To learn about adverbs, be able to identify them in
sentences and use them in writing.

Learning Outcomes: Daniel's reading level is higher than average for his age. He can express emotion
through reading and can also follow the storyline. We are reading a Minecraft novel, something he
enjoys and possesses much knowledge on. In maths, today we reinforced the column method by
practicing subtraction of 4/5-digit numbers and decimals. For English, we learnt about adverbs and
how writing can be made more interesting through use of them. Daniel wrote a short story using as
many adverbs as possible and demonstrated his range of vocabulary.

Additional Information: What is going well? Focus Area? Student interests, observations?

Daniel performed well today, and his concentration was impressive. He is a very creative young man
who enjoys art. He takes pride in his work and enjoy showing it to me, which today included some of
his drawings. He also likes to explain the techniques he uses to produce them.

Behaviour and Engagement:

1: No interest or engagement.

2: Some interest and engagement at times.

3: Good engagement but inconsistent.

4: Very good engagement; keen to succeed.

5: Highly motivated and fully engaged.

Learning Objectives: To be able to do long multiplication using the column method. To learn about
using verbs in the past and present perfect tenses. To practice reading aloud.

Learning Outcomes: Daniel and I looked at multiplication using the column method today. We were
multiplying two-digit numbers by four-digit numbers. Daniel now has a good understanding of this
method and he remembers to add the extra zero when multiplying the tens. He could benefit from
more practice using this method as he sometimes gets slightly confused when there are remainders
which he must carry over to the next column. I think this could be due to the simple fact that he
writes his numbers close together and thus finds it hard to keep track of which part of the sum he
has reached. When I write out questions for him to answer, he is a lot less prone to error. I have
mentioned this to him, and this is something we will reinforce with further long multiplication
questions when we revise this topic next session.

Additional Information: What is going well? Focus Area? Student interests, observations?

Daniel’s recollection of previous topics and his ability to make connections between them is good.
He is motivated and focussed for the most part but can sometimes become frustrated at himself
when he makes a mistake. He responds very well to encouragement and is gradually becoming more
confident in his own ability.

Behaviour and Engagement:

1: No interest or engagement.

2: Some interest and engagement at times.

3: Good engagement but inconsistent.

4: Very good engagement; keen to succeed.

5: Highly motivated and fully engaged.

Learning Objectives: To understand where energy comes from and how living things gain energy by
looking at food chains. To learn what producer, consumer, prey and predator mean and be able to
identify the various members of a food chain in these terms. To understand the different functions
of adverbs (to describe verbs, to describe adjectives, to describe other adverbs) and learn about
adverbials. To practice creative writing using adverbs and adverbials.

Learning Outcomes: Daniel applied himself fully in science and was able to engage well in discussion.
He can describe a food chain using appropriate terms and knows how they work. Daniel has a good
grasp of the interdependence of members in a food chain and is also able to explain what would
happen if there was an increase or decrease in the population of a species. In English, Daniel and I
played a word game wherein we came up with as many adverbs to describe common verbs. He
knows how to differentiate between adjectives and adverbs. Daniel wrote a poem about driving
using adverbials which he wants to finish off and design for homework.

Additional Information: What is going well? Focus Area? Student interests, observations?

Daniel is very enthusiastic about science and enjoys learning it, especially when he can relate his own
experiences and knowledge to the topics he is studying. His knowledge of how the natural world
works is good for his age.

Behaviour and Engagement:

1: No interest or engagement.

2: Some interest and engagement at times.

3: Good engagement but inconsistent.

4: Very good engagement; keen to succeed.

5: Highly motivated and fully engaged.

Learning Objectives: To become more fluent in long multiplication using the column method. To
practice mental multiplication of the 5-9 times tables. To increase speed in joined-up handwriting. To
learn this weeks' SATS spellings.

Learning Outcomes: Daniel correctly answered the maths questions he'd made a mistake in last time
and attempted new word problems related to multiplication. He still occasionally forgets to begin
the second line of the multiplication with a zero (tens column) and can sometimes confuse the
multiplications with the additions (adding remainders after the multiplication) in his answers.
Generally, he is showing an improvement in this area. Daniel practised writing his spellings for this
week using joint-up handwriting and went on to spell all of the vocabulary correctly.

Additional Information: What is going well? Focus Area? Student interests, observations?

Daniel was well-motivated today and completed all of his tasks within the session. Daniel can
become disheartened when he makes a mistake if he has to repeat multi-step sums again. I find it
helps if he 'talks me through' the sums as he is doing them, and I correct him as he goes along.

Behaviour and Engagement:

1: No interest or engagement.

2: Some interest and engagement at times.

3: Good engagement but inconsistent.

4: Very good engagement; keen to succeed.

5: Highly motivated and fully engaged.
