DATA COLLECTION-I, II

Literature Study:
Standards: Understanding and collecting data regarding the core functions, operations,
movements of human activities with respect to the functions, space requirements, population
involved for the program, that the students think necessary for the project both at micro and
macro level and explain via visual interpretation.
For example at microlevel analysis, it is necessary to document the anthropometrics for
chair, table, bed and the minimum space required for mentally challenged people for
Mental Hospital project, whereas it is not as much important to document the same thing
for a group housing project as it is assumed that the student has already gain the basic
knowledge for last four years.
At a macro level, lets say, for an Hotel, the flow of activities and interrelationships of
these spaces with a hierarchy is necessary to understand the program so that the
students can interpret the program correctly in whatever design language they want to
express the program. So it is crucial to document and understand this during the
Literature Study.
The idea is not to overcrowd with unnecessary information and document the data
judiciously while highlighting the crucial information. This needs some sincere study of
the subject and screening of data at hand.

Flow Chart/Bubble Diagram: Creating flow charts based on the data collection from literature
study to understand the program in an intrinsic manner which can be utilised at conceptual
development level. The students may choose to do this exercise by hand or any other software
tools as per their convenience. The output should be in PDF in landscape mode(ideally).
Local Bye Laws: Understanding and documenting all necessary local bye laws for the taken
project.
Fire Safety: Understanding and documenting all necessary fire safety requirements for the
taken project as per the building user type. For example: Fire exits, Fire escapes, maximum
distance for fire escape, number of doors in a room, width of doors, material type, fire rating of
building components, signage requirement as per fire safety etc. for crucial areas of the
program.
Climatic Study: Understanding and documenting the Climate type, its characteristics,
advantages and disadvantages, challenges and required interventions in terms of passive
architecture to make the program sustainable at Site, building and Component scales.
Any special service needs to be studied: Understanding any special service or feature
specific to the project needs to be documented. For example, for a skyscraper it is necessary for
the student to understand how wind load affects the building structure and design of the building
in terms of shape and facade.

It's necessary to keep the social, environmental and economical context while studying and
documenting material regarding the project.

Case Studies:
In the current scenario, because of COVID -19 it might not be possible for the students to visit
the site physically. If the situation allows, they should consider the Live case studies i.e; visiting
the Site and documenting it personally. However, they must take all precautions like, wearing a
mask, social distancing, travelling through their own vehicle etc. while undertaking case studies.
If the student manages to have a live case study the minimum number of case studies should
be three(two Book case studies and one live case study). In case the student is not able to
undertake live case studies then the number of case studies should be at least four.
Ideally depending on the project, there should be at least one international project. For those
where the construction has already started or completed, must undertake the mentioned project
as one of the case studies.
The format for the case studies shall be as follows:

Basic Details:-
● Title of the project
● Location
● Building type
● Site Area
● Project Cost
● Name of the Architect
● Name of the Owner
● Year of completion
● Total Built up area
● Allowed FAR/ Achieved FAR
● Allowed Ground Coverage Area/Achieved Ground Coverage
● Height of the Building
● Set backs etc.
Program Analysis through the Plans:-
The students shall analyse the Site plan, with its context based on the knowledge gained
through the literature study. Similarly the building plans, sections, elevations etc. to be studied
and analysed in the same sequence of the Literature Study( in the context of space standards,
inter relationships of spaces through flow chart, status of implementation of local bye laws,
status of fire safety standards adopted, Climatic Analysis, any design techniques implemented
in the project as per the climatic conditions, any special aspect specific to the project that needs
mention) .

This exercise shall be repeated for all the case studies which will allow students to compare the
literature studies, case studies with adequate quantification later on in the next module for data
analysis.

Outcome:
In this process the students are expected to understand the process of finding and identifying
the characteristics of different aspects of building through literature study and then apply the
gained knowledge in the case studies to evaluate its merit and demerits.

Important Point:
The students must not only depend on the available data but also create interpretations from the
available data. For example if only plans are available for a case study the students must create
sections to extend the analysis and complete the study of the case studies.
● The students are expected to submit the required drawings/documents in PDF/JPEG
format with all the necessary information such as Name, Roll Number, Title of the
Submission, Date of Submission, Submission Code(Week Number), Guide Name,
Scale(if applicable).
● For all submissions, the students must submit by the due date mentioned in the
schedule from their official Chitkara email id to the respective Guides keeping the Prof
Antony Kumar Boity & Asst. Prof. Swati Sharma in CC.
● Any late submission within a week shall result in getting evaluated from 50 % of the
allotted maximum marks.
● It is mandatory to clear the previous module to be able to continue to the next module.
● Plagiarism is a serious issue and if found in any submission or work shall stand nullified
and serious action shall be taken against the student committing such acts.
● While writing submission emails the students are expected to mention all relevant details
for Subjects and address cordially to the guide stating the purpose/objective of the mail.
For example, the subject to be ‘16159910XX, Submission_Week-1, Project
Identification’,
● Minimum content of the mail to be for example:
Respected Sir,

Please find attached herewith the submission for Week X scheduled on

xx-xx-2020 with the following details.

With regards
NameXXXXX XX
Roll No: XXX
● Any submission without adhering to the instructions shall be considered invalid.
