Chapter IV

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

This chapter deals with the results, analysis, and interpretation of data gathered

from the Bolinao Fisherman on how they produce fermented Bolinao and other

significant data in Bolinao processing in Patnanungan, Quezon. The data reflected in the

form of tables that are organized according to the objectives of the research.

The table shows that 5 out of 13 respondents said that they’ve been in Bolinao

processing business for about 1 to 4 years which has a percentage of 38.46, 4 out of 13

was in the business for about 5 – 8 years and has percentage of 30.77. There were 2 out

of 13 has responded that they’ve been in the business for about 13 – 16 years with an

equivalent of 15.39 %. One respondent said that they’ve been in the business for about 9

– 12 years and another one which has been in the business for almost 17 – 20 years which

has an equivalent of 7.69 % respectively.

By getting their average, they have been in been business for about 7.42 years. It

implies that they have been in the business for not so long.

On the table shown above, 7 out of 13 responded that their initial fund in Bolinao

fermentation business is in the range of 5,001 – 10,000 Pesos with a percentage of 53.85.

Another 3 respondents out of 13 has an initial fund of 10,001 – 15,000 Pesos with an

equivalent percentage of 23.08 %. There are 3 respondents with an initial fund of 1 –

5,000 Pesos, 15,001 – 20,000 Pesos, and 20,001 -25, 000 Pesos respectively with an

equivalent percentage of 7.69.

By getting their average, their initial fund in starting the business is Php. 10,192.01.

It implies that the initial fund is quite small.

The table 1 shows the frequency and percentage of profit within a month. The

minimum range of profit with 5,001 – 10,000 Pesos which have 5 respondents out of 13

with an equivalent of 38.46 %. In the business with a profit range of 20,001 – 25,000

Pesos was responded by 3 out of 13 with a percentage of 23.07. The range of initial profit

of 1 – 5,000 Pesos was responded by 2 and another 2 for a monthly profit range of 15,001

– 20,000 Pesos with an equivalent of 15.39 % respectively. One respondent has answer to

an initial profit range of 10,001 – 15,000 Pesos with a percentage of 7.69.

By getting the average of their monthly profit, it amounts of Php. 15,962.04. It

implies that quite high.

Table 4 shows the frequency and percentage distribution in terms of what make

them motivates to start this business. First, 8 out of 17 or 47.06 % in due to fight poverty,

another is 7 out of 17 or 41.18 percent in profit, and last is primary occupation we have 2

out of 17 or 11.76 percent.

The table 5 shows the frequency and percentage of distribution in terms of starting

this kind of business. In planned, it gets 13 out of 13 or 100 percent.

The table 6 shows the frequency and percentage of standard ingredients. We

have 13 or 100 percent from the salt.

The table 7 shows the frequency and percentage of equipment used in making

fermentation of bolinao. Pale (Timba), Wash tub (banyera), and the Plastic drum are the

common used tools in Bolinao fermentation with a total respond of 13 with an equivalent

of 100 %.

The table 9 shows the frequency and percentage of appropriate containers of

fermentation Bolinao. Plastic ware is commonly used in the process with a respond of 12

or 92.31 % and least common used is the ceramic jar with a respond of 1 or 7.69 %.

The table 8 shows the frequency and percentage distribution of span a normal

process of fermentation of Bolinao. In a span of month, 9 out of 13 has a percentage of

69.23. In 2 months, 3 out of 13 has a percentage of 23.08 and a single respond for 3

months with a percentage of 7.69.

Table 10 shows some possible uses of fermented Bolinao, also its frequency

and percentage. The first possible use is to make it a Dish or viand with the frequency

and percentage of 13 or 33.33. Its second possible use is to make it a Sauce it got 13 or

33.33 percent, and besides, the fermented Bolinao is possible to use as spices with the

frequency of 13 and 33.33 percent.

Table 11 shows the frequency and percentage distribution of Home based Bolinao

prcessing response in terms of effect to the individual, family, and to the community.

These responses are based on the multiple answers of the respondents. For an individual,

it gives an additional profit with a respond of 13, equivalent to 33.33 %. For the family, it

offers financial support for the family’s necessity with a 13 responds and an equivalent

percentage of 33.33, and for the community, it supports an additional income to them

with a total respond of 13 and an equivalent percentage of 33.33.

The table 12 shows the frequency and percentage of monthly catching of Bolinao

fish. Among the months of the year, the peak of harvesting lies under the month of

August with percentage of 100%.

It reveals that the catching Bolinao is seasonal, once a year.

The table 13 shows the frequency and percentage distribution in terms of the

benefits received by the local producers of fermented Bolinao from the local government

unit of Patnanungan, Quezon. Most of the producers didn’t received any benefits from

the local government with a frequency of 8 and equivalent to 61.54 %. While there are

producers mentioned that they received least benefits from the local government and it

includes free nets for fishing with a frequency of five and an equivalent percentage of

38.46.

The table 14 shows the frequency and percentage distribution of non-government

support to the producers of fermented Bolinao. Financial support from the non-

government unit has a frequency of 9 with a percentage of 69.23. Some technical support

from non-government unit has a frequency of 4 with an equivalent of 30.77 %.

Table 16 shows the different problems in business (fermentation of Bolinao) and

each frequency and percentage. The first problem is about Illegal used of dynamite to

catch fish it has a frequency of 5 and a percentage of 20, Next problem is more on

competent the producers is, it got a frequency of 4 and 16 percent. The third problem got

8 and 32 percent this is about weather climates, in addition, some Bolinao makers

experiencing the problem less of price its frequency is 5 and its percentage is 20. And

lastly, the sixth problem is when nets are broken it got 2 frequency and 8 percentage.

The table 17 shows the frequency and percentage distribution in terms of the

solution to the different problems shown in the table 16. The first solution to the first

problem was to report to the police about the illegal fishing that has a frequency of 5 and

an equivalent of 20.83%. The solution to the second problem was to let the fishermen to

engage in the free competition that has a frequency of 4 and an equivalent of 16.67%.

The solution to the third problem was to wait until the weather becomes good that has a

frequency of 8 and an equivalent of 33.33%. The solution to the fourth problem was to

look for a buyer with a higher price that has a frequency of 5 and an equivalent of

20.83%. The last problem that has a solution to use much durable net to catch Bolinao

fish has a frequency of 2 and an equivalent of 8.33%.

The table 15 shows the local ways of making fermentation of Bolinao. The first

up to the fourth process has the same frequency and percentage, they only differ at the

fifth process which has two option. The first option was to transfer the product into

plastic timba which has a frequency of 9 and equivalent to 69.23%, then the second

option was to transfer the product into ceramic jar which has a frequency of 4 and

equivalent to 30.77%. The sixth process of making the fermented Bolinao has a

frequency of 13 and equivalent to 100%. The seventh process has three different option

of length of fermentation. It includes a month which has a frequency of 9 and an

equivalent of 69.23%. The second option was to ferment the product within 2 months that

has a frequency of 3 with an equivalent of 23.08%. The last option was to ferment the

product within 3 months that has a response of 1 which has an equivalent of 7.69%. The

last part of the process has a percentage of 100 and a total frequency of 13.
