UNDERSTAND
FACTORING QUADRATIC TRINOMIAL WHERE A=1

Let’s recall about Quadratic Trinomial

Definition:
Trinomial is a polynomial consist of three terms.

Here are some examples of Quadratic Trinomial where a=1.

NOTE:
To factor trinomials with 1 as the numerical coefficient of the leading
term.
When the last term of a trinomial is positive, find the two factors with
the same signs. The sign is the sign of the middle term; and
When the last term of a trinomial is negative, find two factors with
opposite signs whose sum is the coefficient of the middle term.

REMEMBER
Key Points

To factor trinomials with 1 as the numerical coefficient of the leading term.

1. Factor the leading term of the trinomial and write these factors as the leading terms of
the factors;
2. List down all the factors of the last term;
3. Identify which factor pair sums up to the middle term; then
4. Write each factor in the pairs as the last term of the binomial factors.
