RECALL CLASS NOTES: OUTLINE FORMAT

Factoring by grouping GCF To factor a number means to write it as a product of two or more numbers.
(Greatest Common Factor) The product is a factored form of the number.
Multiply Factoring is a process that “undoes” multiplying. We multiply 6 * 2 to
Exponent Obtain 12, but we factor 12 by writing it as 6 * 2. Other factored forms
Prime number Of 12 are -6(-2), 3*4, -3(-4), 12*1, -12(-1), and 2*2*3.
Prime factor Step 1: Factor. Write each number in prime factored form.
Primes Step 2: List common factors. List each prime number or each variable that
Factor Is a factor of every term in the list.
Trinomial Step 3: Choose least exponents. Use as exponents on the common prime
Variable Factors the least exponents from the prime factored forms.
Product Step 4: Multiply the primes from step 3. If there are no primes left after
Polynomial Step 3, the greatest common factor is 1.
The exponent on a variable in the GCF is the least exponent on that
Variable in all terms. When you are factoring terms that have a common
Factor. You must find the GCF of the terms. Then factor out the GCF, if
One exists. (Divide by GCF). Then check by multiplying. When a
Polynomial has 4 terms; common factors can sometimes be used to factor
By grouping. Factoring by grouping: 6ax+24x+a+4 = (a+4) (6x+1)
When the constant term of a trinomial is positive, look for two numbers
With the same sign. The sign is that of the middle term.
When the constant term of a trinomial is negative, look for two numbers
Whose product is negative. One must be positive and the other negative.
