Learning Objective/s
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help
you break an expression into different factors and answer the topical
questions. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different
learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary
level of students.
CONTENT STANDARDS:
The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of factors of
polynomials, rational algebraic expressions, linear equations and
inequalities in two variables, systems of linear equations and inequalities in
two variables and linear functions.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD:
The learner is able to formulate real-life problems involving factors of
polynomials, rational algebraic expressions, linear equations and
inequalities in two variables, systems of linear equations and inequalities in
two variables and linear functions, and solve these problems accurately
using a variety of strategies.

LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
1. Factor completely different types of polynomials (polynomials with
common monomial factor, difference of two squares, sum and difference
of two cubes, perfect square trinomials, and general trinomials).

2. solves problems involving factors of polynomials.

OBJECTIVE:

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. factor polynomials whose terms have common monomial factor.

Lesson Proper
Factor the following:
1. 12x3y5- 20x5y2z
2. kr+kb-pr-pb

Example 1: Factor 12x3y5- 20x5y2z

Steps:

Grouping the terms in a polynomial is also useful technique in

factoring. Some polynomials can be factored by grouping terms in
such a way as to get polynomials with special factors.

Example 2: Factor kr+kb-pr-pb

SOLUTION:

kr+kb-pr-pb

=( kr+kb) –(pr+ pb) group using Associative Property

=k (r +b) – p ( r + b) Distributive property on k and p

= (k-p)(r + b) Distributive property on r + b

Analysis

*FACTORING is the reverse process of multiplication. When a number or a

polynomial is factored, it is rewritten as a product of two or more FACTORS.

*FACTOR is a number or quantity that when multiplied with another

produces a given number or expression. Like factors of 10 is 10 & 1 and 5 &
2.

Factoring is a technique used in solving quadratic equations, simplifying

rational expressions and graphing quadratic functions.

*POLYNOMIALS is said to be factored into prime factors if it is expressed as

*MONOMIAL is a polynomial with one term like 3, 5x. 8x2, 10xy
*The polynomial factor, then is equal to the common monomial factor times
the quotient obtained by dividing the polynomial by the common monomial
factor. This procedure is made possible by the application of DISTRIBUTIVE
PROPERTY in reverse.
To ensure that the polynomial factor is irreducible or a prime polynomial, use
the GREATEST COMMON FACTOR (GCF) of the terms of the given
polynomial.
GCF is the largest number that set of numbers or polynomials have in
common

Additional Activities
Practice Exercise 1.2
A. Factor the following:
GIVEN YOUR ANSWER CORRECT ANSWER
1. 5 m n + 25 mn2
2
5 m n + 25 mn2 divided by
2

common factor 5mn is equal to

m+5n

Factors: 5mn ( m +5n)

2. 10 x4y2-40 x3y Common factor is 10x3y divide

it to 10 x4y2-40 x3y is equal to
xy-4.

Factors: 10x3y (xy-4)

3. 6 a3b + 18 a2b2 – 30 a4b3 Common factor is 6a2b divided

to 6 a3b + 18 a2b2 – 30 a4b3 is a
+3b – 5a2b2.

Factors: 6a2b (a +3b – 5a2b2)

Generalization

1. Why is there a need to find the largest factor common to

each term to find the factors of the given expression?
________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________

To ensure that the polynomial factor is irreducible or a prime

polynomial, use the GREATEST COMMON FACTOR (GCF) of the
terms of the given polynomial.

To factor a polynomial is to express the polynomial as the product of

two or more polynomials.
Distributive property is used to find the product of a polynomial and a
monomial. It is also used to factor polynomial with a common
monomial factor.
Application

Activity 1.3 Real Life Situation

What are the factors that affect natural calamities like

Earthquake and Typhoon? Express your answer in a venn
diagram. The overlapping parts of a circle is/are common
factors which can be compared to common monomial factor in
polynomials.

Earthquake Typhoon
