Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 8

I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the students must have;

1. Find the greatest common factor (GCF) by listing or prime factorization.

2. Factor polynomials completely with common monomial factor; and

3. Use distributive property to factor polynomials.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Lesson 1: Factoring with common monomial factor

III. Procedure

Teachers Activity Students Activity

1. Preliminary Activity

A. PRAYER

The teacher writes his name on the board and introduce herself to the class

Good morning class. I am Sir John, and I will be your teacher for today’s
lesson.

Is that okay with you?

Okay. Before we start, may we stand up and pray? (The teacher calls up
the students for a prayer) Yes, Sir

The student will stand up and pray.

B. CLEANING
Okay, class, before taking your seats, may we all pick up pieces on the
floor and throw them into the trashcan.

C. GREETINGS The students pick up pieces on the floor

Good morning once again, class. and throw it into the trashcan
D. CHECKING OF ATTENDANCE
Are there any absent students today?
Good morning, Sir!

Very Good.
No Sir!

2. Lesson Proper

A. MOTIVATION

And now, let’s proceed to our main topic.

Yes Sir

B. PRESENTATION

Unlocking Words Difficulty

1. Greatest Common Factor (GCF)

 Refers to the common factor having the greatest
numerical factor and with variables having the least
degree.
2. Prime Factors
 A prime factor is a natural number, other than 1, whose
only factors are 1 and itself. The first few prime numbers
are actually 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, and so on.
3. Monomial
 A monomial is a polynomial, which has only one term. A
monomial is an algebraic expression with a single term
but can have multiple variables and a higher degree too.
4. Polynomial
 A polynomial is a type of algebraic expression in which
the exponents of all variables should be a whole number.
The exponents of the variables in any polynomial have to
be a non-negative integer. A polynomial comprises
constants and variables, but we cannot perform division
operations by a variable in polynomials.
 Rewriting a polynomial as a product of polynomial of
smaller degree.
5. Standard Form
 is a way of writing a polynomial such that the term with
the highest power of the variables comes first followed by
the other terms in decreasing order of the power of the
variable.

Example 1: 6x² and 15 x 4

SOLUTION:

Using Greatest Common Factor (GCF)

6: 1, 2, 3, 6, x²

15: 1, 3, 5, 15, x 4

GCF: 3x²

Using Prime Factor

6x²: (2) . (3) . (x²)

15 x 4 : (3,) . (15) . (x ¿¿ 4)¿

GCF: 3x²

Find the GCF of each pair of monomials. Using prime factors.

1. 6a and 18ab
 6a: (2) . (3) . a
 18ab: (2) . (3) . (3) . (a) . (b)
 = (2) . (3) . (a)
 GCF is 6a
2. 10a and 12a²b
 10a: (2) . (5) . (a)
 12a²b: (2) . (2) . (3) . (a²) . (b)
 = (2) . (a)
 GCF is 2a
3. -8x²y and 16xy
 -8x²y: -(2).(2).(2)(x²).(y)
 16xy: (2).(2).(2).(2).(x).(y)
 = (2).(2).(2).(x).(y)
 GCF is 8xy
Class, did you understand how to use prime factorization? Okay, let’s
have a little activity.

your activity notebook
