Common Monomial Factor

Common Monomial Factor is a number, a

variable, or a combination of number and
variable which can be found in each term of a
given polynomial.
Greatest Common Monomial factor is the
largest term that goes into a list of given terms.
In order to identify the greatest common
monomial factor, write the prime factorization
of each term, and the product of the common
factors is the greatest common monomial
factor.

STEPS IN FACTORING COMMON MONOMIAL

1. Find the GCF of all the terms in the

polynomial.
2. Express each term as a product of the GCF
and another factor.
3. Use the distributive property to factor out
the GCF.
Factor the following.
1. 2x3−6x2 5. 3a³ + 6a²
2. 3ab2 - 6a2b 6. 12x - 18y
3. 12x2y + 15xy2 7. 4x³ + 8x² - 2x
4. 3x2 - 6x – 30
