Match the expressions
Some of the expressions below are the same. Match up the ones that are equal
then write the others in a way similar to the others.

4(y – 2) 4y – 2y²

3(y + 4) 10 – 5y

y(y + 2) 4y – 8

2y² - 4y

2y(y – 2) y² + 2y

y(4 – 2y)
Answers
4(y – 2) 4y – 2y²

3(y + 4) 10 – 5y

y(y + 2) 4y – 8

5(2 – y) 2y² - 4y

2y(y – 2) y² + 2y

y(4 – 2y) 3y + 12

An example
To factorise an expression we write it using brackets and take out all the common factors.
Examples
1. 12a - 16
1. Find the highest common
What is the
factor of the numbers
largest factor
2. Look for any common
of 12 and 16?
unknown factors
4 3. Write the common factors
outside the brackets
4. Write what is left inside the
brackets
4x3xa 4x4 (Rembering the operation
+/-)
Common factors?
Now add any unknowns

So 12a – 16 = 4 ( 3a –) 4
Example 2
Remember to follow each step.

1. Find the highest common

What is the
Examples factor of the numbers
largest factor
2. Look for any common
2. 15ab2 + 10b of 15 and 10?
5 unknown factors
3. Write the common factors
outside the brackets
4. Write what is left inside the
brackets
5x3xaxbxb 5x2xb (Rembering the operation
+/-)
Common factors?
Now add any unknowns

So 15ab2 + 10b = 5b ( 3ab + 2 )

Example 2
Remember to follow each step.

1. Find the highest common

What is the
Examples factor of the numbers
largest factor
2. Look for any common
2. 15ab2 + 10b of 15 and 10?
5 unknown factors
3. Write the common factors
outside the brackets
4. Write what is left inside the
brackets
5x3xaxbxb 5x2xb (Rembering the operation
+/-)
Common factors?
Now add any unknowns

So 15ab2 + 10b = 5b ( 3ab + 2 )

1. Workout the HCF of the numbers in
each pair
1. 15 and 10
15 = 5x 3 10 = 5x 2
HCF = 5
LCM = 5 X 3 X2 = 30

2. 12and 20
12 = 4 x 3 20 = 4 x 5
HCF = 4
LCM = 4 X 3 X5 = 60

9/24/20
2. Factorise each expression
2x + 6 = 2 ( x +3)
6n – 48 = 6(n- 8)
8 + 4c = 4(2 +c)
8 - 8x = 8( 1 – x)
2x – 24 = 2 (x- 12)

9/24/20
Simplify each expression by collecting
like terms. Then factorise it.
5a +5 +3a +11 = 8a +16
7x – 6 +x -2 = 8x – 8 = 8 (x – 1)
8 – 3y +10 – 3y = 18 – 6y

9/24/20
3. Factorise each expression as much as
possible
2a + 4b = 2 (a +2b)
6a +2b = 2 (3a +b)
18c -12d = 6 (3c – 2d)
14x – 7y = 7 (2x – 1)

9/24/20
Four integers are n,n+6 , n +12 and n
+18
A. Write down the four numbers,when:
n = 10
10 16 22 28
n = 30
30 36 42 48
B. Write down an expression for the sum of the four numbers . Simplify your expression and
factorise it as much as possible.
n + n +6 + n +12 + n + 18 = 4n +36 = 4 (n +9)
