C. Presentation

Greatest Common Monomial Factor is a greatest variable or constant that exists in

all the terms in the given polynomials. We can find the Greatest Common Factor
(GCF) of two numbers by examining their prime factorizations.

Example: What is the GCF of 12 and 18?

12 = 2 x 2 x 3 2 x 3 = 6, The GCF of 12 and 18 is 6

18 = 2 x 3 x 3
Greatest Common Monomial Factor is the process of writing a polynomial as a
product of two polynomials. Let us analyze this factoring by remembering four
important terms:

According to the Compact Oxford English Dictionary, the word “Polynomial” comes
from the Latin-Greek words POLY means many and NOMEN means name or term.
Polynomial is an algebraic expression that shows the sum/difference of two or more
terms containing whole number exponents on the variable.

A variable is a symbol which represent an unknown value.

A constants is a symbol or number with fixed value.

Illustrative Example

Identify the greatest common monomial factor of the polynomial by following the
guide questions.
3 2
Example 1: 12 x −8 x
3
a. What are the factors of each term? 12 x = 2 · 2 · 3 · x · x · x
2
8x =2·2·2·x·x
3
b. Are there common factors? 12 x = 2 · 2 · 3 · x · x · x
2
8x = 2 · 2 · 2·x · x

Yes, factors of 2’s and x.

c. What is the product of the The product of 2· 2 · x · x is 4 x2

greatest common factor?

d. What is the common monomial The common monomial factor is 4 x2

factor of the polynomial?
After following the guided questions, you proceed to the next level, FACTOR

Steps in Factoring Polynomials using Greatest Common Monomial Factor

(GCMF)

Example 1: 12 x3 −8 x2

Step 1: Find the greatest common factor of each term in the polynomial.
The common monomial factor of 12 x3 ∧8 x2 is 4 x2 .

Step 2: Make two sets of parentheses, one with no operation and the second one
has same operation with the given example.
3 2
12 x −8 x = (____)( ___ - ___ )

Step 3: Place the greatest common monomial factor in the first parenthesis.
3 2
12 x −8 x = ¿)(___ - ___)

Step 4: Divide the greatest monomial factor from the first term and place it on the
first line of the second parenthesis.
3
12 x
=3 x 12 −8 x ( 4 x )=¿

Step 5: Divide the greatest common monomial factor from the second term and
place it second line of the second parenthesis.

4x

The factor of 12 x3 −8 x2 is(4 x2 )(3 x−2)
