CONVERSATION

Individual work. Listen and complete the following interview

Presenter: Good morning, everyone. On today's

show, we've got Chris Svensson with us, the (1)
Scheduled book of No more nine to
five, the new best- selling book about work–life
balance in the current working world. Good
morning, Chris.
Thanks for coming.
Chris: Thanks for (2) having me, Anna.
Presenter: So, Chris, tell us about your book
and how the concept of a work–life balance has been (3) organized_ ?
Chris: Well, in the more traditional workplaces, people's working lives and
their private lives are, or were, clearly divided. People often work from nine
in the morning until five or six in the evening. People (4) over whelmed
stay late in
the office and work in the evenings. This is called working (5) working hard
.
Presenter: OK, and what else?
Chris: Well, in these environments it isn't common for people to work at the
weekend or while they're on holiday. They can clearly separate their (6)
work lives and their private lives. And the evenings, weekends and
holidays are free to focus on non-work areas of life, such as hobbies,
interests, sports, spending time with the family and friends, and so on. It's
important and healthy not to spend all your time just working, right?
Presenter: Right! So what has changed? How are things different now?
Chris: Well, for a start, most (7) people can now access their work emails
from their mobile phones. So they are more likely to quickly reply to an
important mail in the evening or at the (8) night . The same goes for
laptops. It's easier to access your work in the evenings from home or even
from your hotel when you're on holiday.

Presenter: That doesn't sound like much of a work–life balance. It (9)
like like all work.
Chris: Exactly, but this new
mobility brings a lot of advantages
with it. More people are now able
to work flexibly, so if they need to
leave the office early one
afternoon to be with their family,
they can catch up on work that
evening from home or somewhere
else.
Presenter: That sounds good. So, what you're saying is that although (10)
Stuff like divisions between work and life are fading, many employees now
have more freedom to do their work from different locations and at different
times.
Chris: Yes, that's it.

MEET NEW PEOPLE

In order for a business to survive in today's world, it is important that we
regularly review what we are doing and how we are doing it. By considering
new ideas and new ways of doing things, and trying to innovate, we can
improve on our products/services, increase sales, reduce costs and make
our processes more effective and efficient. Innovation is key to increasing
profits. There are several ways a company can be innovative with their
products and services. Today we will look at four of them.

When we think of innovation, we often think of new technologies. While they
might be impressive, we should not use new technologies just because they
are available. It is important to consider how the technology can improve our
product/service and make a difference to our customer. Companies that
produce cars, toiletries, household appliances, etc. often have a large R&D
department to work on making their
products better.
By listening to customer feedback, we can
get their opinions on how we are doing and
find out about what it is that they want. We
also need to be aware of changes in
customer demands and keep up with the
times. When fast food restaurant
McDonald's realized that the market
wanted healthier choices, they introduced
fruit and salads, while removing the 'super-
size' option from their menus.
Your business might be doing well, but
there is no growth or development and
there is a risk that your competitors might
take away some of your customers.
Innovation sometimes means developing a
new product that targets a different market.
Although video games were often played
by boys, in 2006, video games giant Nintendo introduced the game console
Nintendo Wii, successfully targeting girls and older customers with games
like Cooking Mama and Brain Training.
By looking at the changes to the customer's lifestyle and needs, we
sometimes realize that there might be better ways to serve them. Customers
who do not have a lot of time might prefer to have their food or their
shopping delivered to their homes, or they might like to do their banking
online rather than in an actual bank.
Not all innovation will bring success to our businesses, but it can give us the
opportunity to grow and learn more about what we do and what our
customers might want.
