b) analyzing the relationships among the three
branches in a system of checks and balances and
separation of powers
2. English 12.6 The student will write in a variety of forms to
include persuasive and argumentative reflective,
interpretive, and analytic with an emphasis on
persuasion/argumentation.
a) Produce arguments in writing that develop a thesis to
demonstrate knowledgeable judgments, address
counterclaims, and provide effective conclusions.
b) Use a variety of rhetorical strategies to clarify and
defend a position organizing claims, counterclaims,
and evidence in a sustained and logical sequence.

In this activity, my students are going to use Edublog to create an online debate about which
Branch of Government has more power than the others .

Activity
1. This is going to be a self-guided lesson, giving students
independent work in class, but collaborative work online.
2. Introduce the topic to the students. The topic is the
Branches of Government and the checks and balances that
exist between them. (Students have studied this topic
many times before, so in order to be pique their interest,
we will be examining them from a different perspective
today.)
3. The students are to read the two popular market articles:
