She: Now I have with me in the studio State Mike Douglas who is Ben else about it
earlier this week collecting caterpillars from oak trees….
Is that right??
He: yes that's right
She: and I understand that you won't connecting these caterpillars in order to conserve
the more you
He: Absolutely not the caterpillars I've been collecting all from a kind of moth called
the oak processionary moth these caterpillars can cause huge amounts of damage on
trays they can strip all the leaves from an oak tree leaving it completely bad weakening
the tree considerably
She: Oak tree ..
He: Yes they are extremely destructive, Make a note to self harm humans touching
them all their nests can give you a nasty rash and even give you a sore throat or cause
breathing difficulties and eye problems
She: they sound nasty how come I've never heard of them before
He: well Well they've been in and around London since 2006 in some parts of west and
southwest London unfortunately we've lost the battle the months ahead to stay and
there's nothing we can do about it we working in the area around Croydon where there's
been another outbreak with trying to contain it so it doesn't spread any further
She: So how do you spell send Oak processionary moth??
He: Will the easiest thing to look out for is that nest , They look like a gray warts on the
side of a tree somewhere about the size of a golf ball while large ones can be up to two
feet in diameter,
She: That's huge
He: it is You can imagine how many caterpillars you can find in a nest that big the
other thing we are doing is setting traps for the months between July and September to
attract the adult moths we doing this over to km area so we can monitor how far the
most spreading and make sure they own flying Beyond where we expect them to be
She: Now I understand that the oak processionary moth .Is not the only past that you
were worried about
He: no it's not very many hundreds of pass that could have a terrible effect on our
Wildlife if they not monitored correctly as more and more products a bulletin from
other countries rather than being produced here in the UK morrible funghi beetles
animals allowed to travel to new areas while warmer temperatures are allowing them to
survive and flourish where previously that have been unable to it's believed that such
pass as these are moving closer to the poles at a rate of around 3 km is a year some
insects are moving even faster at about 10 km is a year,
Some insects are moving even faster at about 10 km a year the pine processionary moth
for example is gradually moving North through France and he's now breathing close to
Paris we've already have outbreaks in the UK which we've managed to contain but if we
don't keep up the vigilants it means that we could see the decline of some of our most
important tree species
She: ¿What can be done about that??
He: It's hard there's very little government funding for this so we are encouraging the
public to be our eyes and is well the public. There's very little government funding for
this,so we are encouraging the public to be our eyes and is
She: How can I do that??
He: well the public can help us bought these pests while they're in their Gardens in
Parks Woodlands generally answered about to help us control the threats before they
become too serious a problema,it's not the first time we've asked the public to do this
not long ago there was an outbreak of the Citrus longhorn beetles which sometimes
arrive on trees and shrubs from Asia or in packing crates on the number of these was
spotted by Vigilant members of the public and the threat was intercepted
She: And if you are unable to contain the Oprah session remove problema.Unable to
contain the Oprah session remove problem.
He: Well we may face a real problem in the 1970 Britain lost all is Elm trays to Dutch
elm disease altering the landscape significantly,We could say the same thing happened
the game
She:You know the general public waiting knowledgeable enough to identify what is a
tree disease or threat to etrian what is just Naturals only bag
He: No in most cases not and that's why we've launched a training program to train
volunteers and want to look out for so that we can put together and National picture of
tree Health, people are interested in becoming a volunteer log on to our website for
details of the nearest training program
She: Thanks very much for coming in to talk to us about this very worthy program
