2 - Pacing

Problem 1. In walking along a 75-m course, the pacer of a field party counted 43.50, 44.00,
43.50, 43.75, 44.50, and 43.25 strides. Then 105.50, 106.00, 105,75, and 106.25 strides were
counted in walking from one marker to another established along a straight and level course.
Determine the distance between the two markers.

Problem 2. A student paces a 50-m length five times with the following results: 57.00, 56.75,
56.50, 58.00, and 56.25 paces. Determine how many paces must he steps off to establish a
distance of 450 meters on level ground.

Problem 3. Determine the length of a line negotiated in 208 paces by a person whose pace is
0.76 meters long.

Write your solutions below.

Problem 1.

Given:

Let: (X1) 43.50,44.00,43.50,43.75,44.50,43.25 number of strides with 75m course

(X) 105.50, 106.00, 105.75, 106.25 strides from one marker to another

Required: Determine the distance between the two markers (Total distance),
Pace Factor (X1), Pace(x)

Solution: Pace Factor Computation (x1)

(X1) = 43.50 + 44.00 + 43.50 + 43.75 + 44.50 + 43.25

6
(X1) = 43.75 strides
(X1) = 43.75 strides (1 stride = 2 paces) = 43.75 x 2
(X1) = 43.75(2) = 87.5 paces
= 75m course
87.5 paces

Pace Factor (X1) = 0.857 m/pace

Pace (X)

(X) 105.50 + 106.00 + 105,75 + 106.25

=
4
(X) = 105.875 strides
(X) = 105.875 strides (1 stride = 2 paces) = 105.875 x 2
(X) = 105.875(2) = 211.75 paces
(X) = 211.75 paces

Total distance = Pace Factor x Pace

= 0.857 m/pace x 211.75 pace
= 0.857 m/pace x 211.75 pace

Total distance = 181.5 m

Problem 2.

Given: 57.00, 56.75, 56.50, 58.00, and 56.25 paces

50-m length
Total distance 450 m

Required: paces to establish a 450-meter distance on level ground

Solution:
Pace Factor Computation (A)
Mean of paces = 57.00 + 56.75 + 56.50 + 58.00 + 56.25
5

Pace factor 284.5

=
5
mean = 56.9 paces

Pace Factor Computation (B)

Pace factor 50m (paces)
=
Total mean of paces

Pace factor 50m

=
56.9 paces

Pace factor
= 0.878735 m/pace

Problem 3.

Given: Let: (Line AB) = 208 paces

Pace Factor = 0.76 m/pace
Required: Length of a line
Solution:
Length of a line (Line AB) = No. of Paces × Pace Factor

Length of a line (Line AB) = 208 paces × 0.76 m/pace

Length of a line (Line AB) = 208 paces × 0.76 m/pace

Distance = 158.08 m
