The houses on every Street look the same. They all have really
nice colors like pink, white, blue, orange and yellow. Every house
has two or three small bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen and a

Big Brothers Big Sisters

of A m erica
Big Brothers Big Sisters is a mentoring organization
in the United States. It helps children and
teenagers from 6 to 18 years oíd with problems at
home or school to find an adult friend. There are
volunteer programs all over the country and they
do a really good job.

FAQ:
How can I become a Big?
First of all, you need to be interested in the program.
Then people from the organization ch e cky o u r
background and interview you. When everything is ready,
they m atch Bigs and Littles with the sam e likes and ¡nterests,
according to the area they live in. Then who knows? You can
be friends forever!

What do the Bigs and Littles do together?

Well, you only need to spend a few hours a month with your Little and do
everyday stuff together, like play video gam es, order pizza, go for a w alk in the park or just
hang out and talk. This is really important for the Littles.

There are so many children and teenagers out there that would love to have a friend and a
guide. So, why don’t you think about it and get involved today?

1. The volunteers in the program are from 6 to 18 years oíd.

2. The Littles are children with problems at school only. V
3. The volunteers talk to some people before they become Bigs. ;j*j

You use your eyes and read this text easily. But what about blind people?
How can they read? fe*
They can read with Braille.

What is Braille?
Braille is a kind of alphabet. In this alphabet, small dots make up the letters of each word. Each number of dots means a
different letter. The dots stick up fromthe paper, so the blind person feels the dots and reads the letters.

Who invented Braille?

Louis Braille. He was born in a small town near Paris, France, in 1809. He became blind at the age of four. At a school for the
blind in Paris, he learned to read some raised capital letters. This kind of alphabet was difficult and many blind people didn’t
like using it. Louis Braille wanted to help blind people read and write easily, so he invented a new alphabet in 1829. He didn’t
use raised letters, but raised dots. Louis Braille died in 1852 and two years later many schools for the blind started using his
alphabet.

Where ¡s Braille used today?

Today, you can find Braille almost everywhere. It is used on menus, watches and elevators! It is also in buildings like banks
and libraries. There are also special computers for blind people. They can use them to type things in Braille for other blind
people to read.

D. Read and write I for Ice Hotel or L for Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Unusual buildings
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is a famous building in Italy.
Why is it so famous? It’s beautiful and it also looks
like it’s going to fall down! They started building it
in 1173, it took about two hundred years to finish
and it wasn’t straight from the very beginning. It’s
about 190 feet tall and has about 300 steps. Many
tourists visit it every year. The building isn’t the
biggest in the world, but it is one
of the most interesting!

The Ice Hotel near Quebec City, Cañada, is a

hotel completely made of snow and ice! It was
the first ice hotel in North America. The hotel
owners build the hotel every year when the
weather gets coid. So you can only stay there
during the winter, of course. It is open from
January till April. Everything in the hotel is
made of ice: the furniture, the walls, even the
beds! Special “ice artists” come from all over
the world to design the inside of the place. This
hotel is definitely the coldest hotel you can visit!

THE MAGNIFICENT MALDIVES

The Maldives are a group of very small islands ¡n the Indian Ocean, near Sr¡ Lanka. They have the smallest

population of any Asían country. There are about 1,200 islands and there are people living on 200 of them. About

400,000 people live in the Maldives and 75,000 of them are on the capital island, Malé. Malé is different from the

other islands in the Maldives, because it doesn’t have any beaches. In fact, there is a wall that goes around the

whole island.

Eighty-seven of the islands in the Maldives have different types of hotels on

them, so tourists can go and enjoy their vacation. They can even stay in a

small cabin right over the water, like the one in the picture.

It’s very easy to get around the islands. W h en you arrive on the

airport island, you can take a dhoni and go to Malé. This is a

small boat used for transportation around the islands. Dhoni

taxis go from the airport island to the capital island every

15 minutes and after

midnight every half hour.

You can use these boat:

to visit other islands,

too.

The Maldives are a popular place for scuba diving, because there are many wonderful

fish in the w ater to see. Also, the w ater is very clear so when you are underwater

you can see for more than 165 feet! There are many professional diving schools with

instructors. They speak many languages, so you can find someone to help you. O f

course, that’s not all you can do on these beautiful islands. You can go whale and

dolphin watching, fishing, surfing, snorkeling, hiking or explore the towns.
