Worksheet 18: Curved graphs
1 Construct a table of values, selecting values from 6  x  6 , for each of the following equations.
Draw the graphs on the same set of axes.
(a) y   x 2  3 (b) y  x 2  2 x  2 (c) y  x 2  8x  16

2 This is the graph of y  x 2  4 x  3 .

Use the graph to estimate the solution of:
(a) x 2  4 x  3  0
(b) x 2  4 x  3  3
(c) x 2  4 x  1

3 By drawing up a table of values, and drawing the graphs on the same set of axes, find the approximate
solutions to the simultaneous equations 2 y  x  1 and y  x 2  4 x  3 .

4 For each of the following:

(a) complete the table of values for each equation
(b) use the points to plot each graph on a separate set of axes.
