A quien pueda interesar,

From being his teacher at SFPC, I know that Mr. Marquet is a dedicated artist and student. He came to the studio
hours, spending as much or more time than any other student on site. He worked on a wide variety of small-scale
projects during the Code Words session, challenging himself and expanding his engagement with computing and
language. He was able to do a great presentation at the concluding reading, although he also had the task of
recording this reading on video — which he accomplished well. He was able to pursue his work as an artist while
also completing his responsibilities as a work-study student, taking the necessary time to document our activities by
taking pictures. It was a particular challenge to fulfill both the work and the study/art requirements during this
intensive session, but he met this challenge very well. It is clear from observing him during Code Studies that when
it is hard to deal with all aspects of a project, he will be able to devote the appropriate time and succeed.

Mr. Marquet’s contributions to Synchrony and Taper — he sent us a computational poem called “Entre Lenguas,”
the first work in more than one language that we published — not only show his strong visual, verbal, and
conceptual ability. They also show that he is willing to seek out unusual opportunities, beyond the most obvious
online venues and beyond his local communities.

Similarly, Mr. Marquet does not simply devise interesting ideas for today’s particular contexts apropos of nothing.
His work arises from research into provocative and relevant avenues in art history, from Douglas Huebler’s
contribution to the Software Exhibition of 1970–1971 to the work of Ulises Carrión. By drawing upon the insights
of past art, without being derivative or becoming overly anxious about influence, he is able to contribute to and
inflect international currents in art.

I find it particularly compelling that Mr. Marquet has responded to the current pandemic by bringing together artists
to perform and offer workshops online. His series Viral : Imagina will offer Spanish-speaking artists and art viewers
a global means of connection. His work on this project has been prompt, thoughtful, and generous. I look forward to
the beginning of the series.

Given Mr. Marquet’s high quality work, and his ability to pursue and complete projects, and the way he has recently
stepped up to support the arts in a time of crisis, I strongly support his application and hope you can approve his
request.

Atentamente,

Nick Montfort

Concerning: research project Vinicius Marquet

To whom it may concern,

Dear Mrs., Mr.,

Please accept this letter as my sincere recommendation of researcher, artist and

educator Vinicius Marquet. In the past year I have intensively collaborated with
Vinicius, while setting up his Ph.D. project ‘Remediating the collaborative storytelling
workshop into digital mediated spaces’, and I have come to know Vinicius as an
extremely insightful, passionate and innovative researcher. I am happy to inform you
that, beginning in the spring of 2020, Vinicius has been accepted as a Ph.D. researcher
at LUCA School of Arts, the largest Belgian university dedicated to Arts & Design, and
associated with KU Leuven University (a top 100 ranked university worldwide).

Vinicius is an influential designer whose interactive storytelling workshops have built

an impressive international reputation. The theoretical frameworks he uses (Augusto
Boal, Paolo Freire) are highly relevant to our work at the Game Art & Design program,
and he has managed, in a short time, to become an important member of our team. In
the fall of 2019 Vinicius has been teaching his ‘Cuentamos Un Secreto’ workshop at our
campus, which was an enormous success, both pedagogically and artistically. His future
work on VR, AR and social spaces will be cutting edge, especially in times when
education is increasingly migrating towards digital environments. In these endeavors,
Vinicius will be surrounded by top practitioners and researchers in digital art, such as
Bart Geerts and Wim Forceville.

I am highly looking forward to being Vinicius’ supervisor in the presented research, and
specifically to joining his search for new artistic, social and educational formats in the
digital era. Because of his impressive record, Vinicius will provide a valuable
contribution to the international allure of LUCA and KU Leuven. Among others, I am
anticipating with great enthusiasm the outcomes of his collaborations with
international top researchers such as Nick Montford (MIT University) and Rafael Perez
Perez (UAM University), who have already agreed to facilitate him within specific
phases of his project.

I have full confidence in Vinicius’ capacities as a scholar and I am convinced that he will
be able to make his ambitions come true. Vinicius is very well-read in various domains
of investigation (sociology, ICT, visual art, pedagogy) and he has the sensitivity to use
his knowledge as input for his artistic experimentations. Because he has a degree in
2/2

both graphic design and interaction design he is highly versatile, creative and flexible,
which is necessary to operate within this interdisciplinary field. The experiences he
creates are very inspiring and testify of a deep understanding of the processes of group
dynamics, both on a local and a global level. I see it as a fascinating challenge to
monitor and coach the remediation of his work into digital spaces.

I could continue for much longer describing the multiple qualities of Vinicius Marquet.
Should you have any further questions regarding any aspect of the application, please
do not hesitate to contact me via the information provided at the head of this letter.

With the most sincere regards,

Steven Malliet

To whom this may concern:

It is my pleasure to write this letter of reference for Vinicius Marquet. I first heard of
Vinicius in 2015 when a colleague recommended his work Anacrón, producto de una hipótesis for
an electronic literature exhibition I was co-curating at the University of California at Berkeley.
From the beginning, I was very impressed with the depth and aesthetics of Anacrón. This work
manages not only to translate a print poem to the digital realm successfully, but also achieves to
create a poetics that depart from the poem’s verbal dimension and ground the aesthetic
experience in navigation dynamics, unexpected pop ups, and sound clips. Anacrón has since
been included in the third volume of the Electronic Literature Collection, edited by the Electronic
Literature Organization in 2016. I have taken a keen interest in this work and it is part of the
corpus of works published in print-digital I investigate in my forthcoming manuscript.

Vinicius’ work on Ulises Carrión, the Mexican artist, writer, and theorist, has been
another point of fruitful exchanges between us. Que viva el presente, an ofrenda for Carrión in
the Mexican Embassy in the Netherlands included some of my own work on the Mexican artist.
VInicius’ work documenting and recovering oral histories and archival materials about Carrión is
an invaluable resource for any researcher, artist, or writer interested in his work. This wealth of
resources has also informed Vinicius’ scholarship on Carrión, a contribution that sheds light on
the theoretical dimensions of Carrión’s artistic production and simultaneously offers new
avenues for interpretation of his eclectic work.

While some have preceded him, Vinicius continues to be a pioneer of electronic

literature, digital arts, and crucially community building projects in Mexico. Cuéntame un secreto
(Tell me a secret), his project on exchanging graphic representation of secrets, combines
ethnographic research, public arts, and storytelling. The seeming simplicity of the project has
fostered its implementation in various contexts, giving the approach of secrets through graphic
representation a deeply human dimension.

Marquet’s curatorial work, teaching experience, and purposefulness to organize events

go hand in hand with his artistic practice. They provide the contexts and the materials for his
own production and simultaneously benefit from it. I have no doubt that he will be an asset for
any institution or company that welcomes him.

Sincerely,

Dr. Élika Ortega
