Unit 2: Powers, Scientific Notation and Roots
Activities – Challenge

Math’n’memes

Throughout this unit, you have been encouraged to learn new rules and patterns regarding powers, scientific notation
and roots. Now, it is time to create mnemonic1 tools so you will never forget them!

For this assignment, you are being asked to express your ideas by using memes. Yes, that’s right. Memes. Here are the
rules you must follow:

1) You will work in pairs or trios. Individual entries will not be accepted.

2) You may either choose to create a series of 5 image-based memes, or a single tik tok-style video.

3) If you choose to create a series of memes, you may either produce different sayings based on the same image or
use different images altogether. There are several online meme generators, such as imgflip, kapwing and make a
meme. There are also many apps for that.

4) If you choose to create a tik-tok style video, it does not need to be uploaded onto Tik Tok, as long as I am able to
watch it. Also, bear in mind you may choose to direct, act or dub the video. You do not need to “appear” in the video,
but if you do, please double check school policy regarding filming minors and necessary parental consent. This youtube
clip shows a series of funny math videos so you may find some inspiration: https://youtu.be/Z4Yzgu8Wg8E.

5) All memes must be suitable for children under the age of 13.

6) Finally, in all you do, you are more than welcome to use informal English, but it needs to be grammatically correct.

This assignment is worth 1.0 point. The best three entries will get an extra 0.5-point bonus.

Mrs. Flavia Costa, your English teacher, will help evaluate your English skills (so, watch out for misspellings and typos).
Mrs. Tatiana Alvim, your Drama teacher, will be available to help you as well. She might have some useful tips in terms
of using props and creating a set for your video. She may also provide important advice on acting, dubbing and
directing it.

I have invited the two of them to help curate your work and select the best entries in terms of effectiveness and artistic
merit.

All memes are due March 30th. Good luck!
