TOPIC ENGLISH SYSTEM OF MEASUREMENTS LESSON NO. 1c

Objectives:

At the end of the lesson the trainees should be able to:


 Use non precision measuring instruments (ruler) in fractional inch system;
 Measure work piece with a ruler using fractional inch system.

The English System

The standard units are foot for length, pound for weight and Fahrenheit for
temperature. Other units of length in the English System are the yard and the mile. The English
units for length are not easily adapted because they were based on dimensions of man and its
units are divided binarily, sexagecimally, and duodecimally.
The unit of length in the inch system is the inch, which may be divided into fractional or
decimal fraction division. The fractional system is based on the binary system or base 2. The
binary fractions commonly used in this system are ½, ¼, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32. and 1/64. The decimal
fraction system has base 10, any number may be written as a product of ten.

STEEL RULE

Also called rulers or scales.


Range in length from 1 - to - 48 inches.
Most common is spring tempered 6-inch.

1. Fractional-Inch
Rule
Divided in fractions of an inch. Such as 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 or
smaller.
Bottom number indicates number of spaces within an inch.
