Course Description:
Pre-stressed concrete is used in a wide range of building and civil structures where its improved
performance can allow longer spans, reduced structural thicknesses, and material savings
compared to simple reinforced concrete. Precast members of these types have accounted for a
significant fraction of all new construction and undoubtedly will continue to do so.
The course is based on 4 key components: (i) Introduction to precast concrete elements; (ii)
advantages and disadvantages of pre-stressed elements and difference between pre-tension and
post-tension beams; (iii) Losses in pre-stressed element (iv) Design of pre-stressed concrete
element for flexural moment and shear.
The course chapters cover an overview of pre-stressed concrete materials, losses in prestress,
flexural analysis of beam section, flexural design of beam and shear design. After this course,
the future engineer will have the ability to design a pre-stressed concrete member for bridges
as well as for other structure types (buildings) based on ACI code.

Course Learning Objectives:

The aim of this course is to learn the basics of pre-stressed concrete design, the methods of this
new technology, the material characteristics, the advantages and disadvantages, the design
principle, losses in pre-stresses members, beam flexural analysis and design and, shear design.

Course Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to know:
1. The difference between RC and PC
2. The ideal position of pre-stressed cable
3. The losses in cables
4. The flexural analysis of PC beam
5. The flexural design of PC beam
6. The shear design of PC member
7. The deflection control.
