WHAT IS THIS MODULE ABOUT?

This module covers the knowledge, skills and attitudes in performing


basic haircut for men. It involves conducting initial consultation with the
patron, assessing their needs, actual cutting of the hair, checking and applying
finishing touches and performing post hair cutting activities.

PREPARE PATRON

WHAT IS THIS LESSON ABOUT?

The lesson discusses about the assessment of the patron’s hair cutting
needs, the appropriate reception to be extended, analyzing the hair and scalp
condition, choice of hair cut he prefers and proper draping procedure to protect
his clothing.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

At the end of the lesson, you be able to:

1) Conduct initial consultation with the patron;


2) Assess client’s needs; and
3) Analyze condition of hair.

Definition of Terms

draping - wearing of protective clothing usually by a patron

shoulder Cape - a garment worn by a client while having a haircut

hair Texture - the general quality as to coarseness or fineness of hair

consultation - meeting between the client and the hairdressers at which


advice is given

Ways of Addressing the Patron

 Greet the client politely, pleasantly and courteously.


 Attend to the client’s needs promptly.
 Acknowledge the arrival of another client and assure that he will soon be
attended to.

All patron need to feel valued. The following interpersonal skills are
desirable:

 Speak clearly.
 Be friendly.
 Give each patron individual attention and respect.

Assessing patron’s hair cutting needs

 Discuss with the client what he wants and expects


 Listen to what he tells you and understand what he requires you to do
 Examine your client’s hair to determine its type, texture, color, length the
factors that may affect the services requested.
 Tell your patron the limitations. Convince him to cut hair to a style you
are sure would suit him.
 Show hair catalogues to guide the patron’s decision.

After assessing your client’s haircutting needs, you may take the
initiative in guiding your client to a decision. Be sure that he understands,
accepts and agrees with you on the decided haircut style.

Examination of Hair and Scalp

 Note the texture pf the hair.


 If it is coarse and tightly curled, you need stronger combs to
stretch the hair out and firmer movements to be applied.

 Note the texture pf the hair.


 Fine hair requires a great deal of attention and expertise.

 Note the thinning crowns and decreasing density of hair.


 Take this into consideration when designing and cutting hairstyles
specifically for men.

Factors Influencing Hairstyle

 Shape the face and head


 Features of the face, head and body
 Quality and quantity of the hair
 Weight, shape and distribution of the hair
 Age of the patron
 Growth pattern, proportion and form.

Preparation

Proper draping for a male client must also be done to make him feel
comfortable. A clean draping garment must be used.

Draping materials:

Shoulder cape
Neck strip
Small towel

Draping procedure

 Seat the client comfortably.


 Tuck in the collar to sure that it will not wrinkle.
 Place the neck strip or towel the around patron’s neck.
 Adjust the cape over the neck strip or towel.
 Fold neck strip or towel around patron’s neck.
 Adjust the cape over neck the strip or towel.
 Fold the neck strip or towel over the cape.

The lesson deals on how implements are prepared, selected and handled
according to styles of hair cut. Hair cutting procedure is also discussed as well
as cutting techniques which are applied to achieve desired style of hair cut.

Tapering - means reducing hair to a point where unwanted weight is

Cutting Tools

Scissors. These are the most important tool in hair cutting


Choose the size of the scissors that best suit the size of your hand.
This will help to cut hair neatly, quickly and efficiently. The best way is to hold
the pair of scissors with the thumb through one handle and the third through
the other.

Razors. Modern

scissors are called hair shapes. The modern razor llike hair shapes has a
replaceable blade and a protective handle. With the opened handle. The
back of the guarded blade is held by the thumb between the pivot and
the tang. The two middle fingers rest and the tang, an either side of the
handle.

Thinning scissors. May be held in the same way as cutting scissors

Clippers. Hand clippers are operated by pushing the handles together while
electric clippers are operated by a motor. The distance between the blade
points and the spacing of the teeth determines how closely the hair can be cut.

Combs. Suitable for cutting are thin and pliable comb, with both fine and
coarse teeth. Fine teeth allow the hair to be controlled and closely cut. Coarse
teeth allow for repeated combing and positioning of the hair.

Mirrors. These are useful while cutting the patron’s hair so that the shape can
clearly be seen over the shoulder around the neck and remain firmly in
position

Cutting collars. Placed over the shoulders, around the neck, and remain
firmly in position.

 Hand held dryer is the most important piece of equipment you need

Precautions when blow styling

 Use only professional tools.


 Never use electrical equipment with wet hands.
 Direct hair away from the scalp.
 Do not keep dryer in one place for too long.
 Do not attempt to shape hair when it is too wet.

Styling Aids

 Blow styling aids protect the hair from excessive heat and give body to
the hair.
 Dressing aids give sheen, shine and gloss to the hair.
 Setting aids enhance the hair’s elasticity and help hair to keep it
manageable.
 Protectors shield the hair from the harsh effects of exposure from the
sun.
 Curl enhancers enable the hair to retain curl or wave formation longer

Tips on Hair Care for Patron

 Keep your hair clean. Use a shampoo formulated for your hair type.
 Use crème rinse if necessary.
 Give your hair a deep conditioning or hot oil treatment once a month.
 Brush your hair often. This distributes the oil evenly through the hair
and adds shine.
 Don’t over use the blow dryer.
 Have your hair trimmed one half inch every month. Regular trimming
keeps split ends to a minimum length.

Dealing with complaints

If your patron does not like the style you have produced, the following
may help:

 Do not allow the client to leave with poor shape and style.
