ASSIGNMENT 1:
SOUND
PROPAGATIO
N
SOUND PROPAGATION
- Sound propagates through air as a longitudinal wave.
- The speed of sound is determined by the properties of the air, and not by the frequency or
amplitude of the sound.
- Sound waves, as well as most other types of waves, can be described in terms of the
following basic wave phenomena.
- Unlike light, sound cannot pass through vacuum
Reflection of sound waves off of surfaces can lead to one of two phenomena –
an:
A. ECHO or a
B. REVERBERATION.
A. REVERBERATION often occurs in a small room with height, width, and length
dimensions of approximately 17 meters or less. Why the magical 17 meters? The effect
of a particular sound wave upon the brain endures for more than a tiny fraction of a
second; the human brain keeps a sound in memory for up to 0.1 seconds.
