Figures of Speech

*1.Simile*
When two unlike things are compared using the words *as or like.*.,the
figure of speech is Simile.
*For example*:
Blue *as* the wing of a halcyon wild.

*2 Metaphor*
When two unlike things are compared implicitly,as if the two things are
synonymous or one,the figure of speech is Metaphor.
*For example*
We weave the *marriage veils* of a queen.

*3 personification*
When an inanimate things is compared to a person in respect of some
quality,the figure of speech is personification.
*For example*
The sun looked down with *fiery eyes* upon the earth below.

*4 Apostrophe*
When an inanimate things or an invisible entity such as God is treated as a
person and spoken to....the figure of speech is apostrophe.
*For example*
Death! where is thy sting?

*5 Alliteration*
When sounds are repeated in a sentence for pleasing or musical effects...the
figure of speech is Alliteration.
*For example*
Weavers weaving at fall of night.
*6 Repetition*
When words are repeated in a sentence for pleasing or musical effects...the
figure of speech is Repetition.
*For example*
Henceforth I ask not good fortune, I myself am good fortune.

*7 Tautology*
When two words or phrases in a sentence mean the same thing,the figure of
speech is Tautology.
*For example*
Done with indoor complaints, libraries,*querulous criticism*

*8 Pun*
When one word in a line is used and can be interrupted with two' or more
different meanings...the figure of speech is Pun.
*For example*
What is life?It depends on the liver.
*9 Onomatopoeia*
When word conveys the sound that is to be expressed,the figure of speech is
Onomatopoeia.

The grass *swished* and *rustled* under his feet.

*10 Transferred Epithet*


When the adjective is transferred from its rightful noun to another in a
sentence...the figure of speech is transferred Epithet.

*For example*
The lonely stars looked down upon the girl.

*11 Synecdoche*
When the part of something is represented by the whole or whole of
something is represented by the part....the figure of speech is Synecdoche.
*For example*
India...played well that day.

*12 Metonymy*
When a word is used to express something that it is closely associated
with,the figure of speech is Metonymy.
*For example*
The *chair* ruled that there would be no discussion on that subject.

*13 Antithesis*
When opposite ideas or words are used in the same sentence...the figure of
speech is Antithesis.
*For example*
When the funds are low and debts are high.

*14 Paradox*
When ideas that are incompatible are reconciled...the figure of speech is
Paradox.
*For example*
Her questions found their own answers.

*15 Climax*
When ideas or words are arranged in ascending order of importance...the
figure of speech is climax.
*For example*
Done with indoor complaints, libraries, querulous criticism.
*16 Anticlimax*
When ideas or words arranged in descending order of importance...the
figure of speech is Anticlimax.
*For example*
The forest comprises hills and valleys, waterfalls and brooks.

*17 Hyperbole*
When a statement is exaggerated or overstated effect...the figure of speech
is Hyperbole.
*For example*
He says he has hundreds of friends.

*18 Inversion*
When the prose order of words in the sentence is not correct...the figure of
speech is Inversion.

A foot and light hearted I take to the open road.

*19 Euphemism*
When a harsh fact expressed in a mild terms....the figure of speech is
Euphemism.
*For example*
His mother has passed away.....(dead).

*20 Interrogation*
When a question is asked instead of a mere statement...the figure of speech
is .. Interrogation.
*For example*
When on earth did my sweet love go?
....In this way .. these are important poetic devices for our exams..so try to
study very well.
