Title: SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR LIFTING AND MECHANICAL Effective date :

HANDLING OPERATION AND DEVICES 20/12/2010

1. General Instructions
 Prior to starting any lifting or mechanical handling operation, you must ensure that:
 all lifting operations are planned and controlled by competent persons.
 all lifting equipment is
- strong, stable.
- suitable for the proposed use.
- checked / inspected.
- appropriately tagged / marked.
- fitted with suitable slings.
- correctly certified and marked with the safe working load.
 the load is checked to ensure it is ready for lifting, e.g. correct sling connected,
fastenings disconnected etc.
 the lift area is free from obstructions, possible hazards and unauthorized personnel at all
times.
 an escape route is available.
 all personnel are competent.
 ground conditions are suitable.
 overhead dangers are considered.
 weather conditions are allowed for.
 During any lifting or mechanical handling operation, you must ensure that:
 the operation is well supervised.
 nobody enters an area where falling or shifting loads could cause injury.
 personnel do not stand below loads or between loads and walls.
 the lift area is kept free from obstructions and hazards.
 good communication is maintained among the operators at all times.
 all lifting operations are stopped immediately if any complications or deviations from the
lifting plan occur during the lift.
 Never:
 exceed Safe Working Loads.
 carry out unauthorized repairs or modifications to lifting equipment.
 stand underneath loads.
 climb onto containers or stacked loads.
 move a load over personnel.

2. Safe Use of Lifting Gear

Shackles
 Use the right type of shackle for the job in hand.
 Check the safe working load of the shackle before use.
 Do not use any shackle which is not marked with the safe working load.

 Examine bow and pin for damage or distortion. Destroy if doubtful.

 Check bow and pin for excessive wear. Destroy when wear is 1/10th or more of original
diameter.
 Make sure pin is free, but not loose, in tapped hole.
 Threads should be undamaged and without flats or appreciable wear.
 Check alignment of holes. The untapped hole should not be too large or worn.
 When using a shackle with “nut and bolt” pin, the pin should be free to rotate when nut is
tight.
 Sound shackles should have a clear ring. To test, suspend and tap lightly with a
hammer.
 To prevent pins unscrewing, secure with a split pin if possible. Alternatively, mouse with
spun yarn.
 Do not use a shackle where the pin can unscrew by “rolling” under the load.
Slings
 Find out the weight to be lifted.
 Check the safe working load marked on the sling; do not use it for any load in excess.
 Do not use fibre or wire rope slings for hot loads and keep them away from welding or
flame cutting operations.
 Examine all slings before use; reject any that are found defective.
 Slings should be protected by suitable packing from sharp edges or corners of the load.
 Rope slings should not be dragged along the floor.
 A sling doubled round a shackle has a safe working load equivalent only to that of a
single part of the rope.
 Take your hands away before the crane takes the load and stand clear.
 Ensure the load is free before lifting.
 Use only recognised signals to the crane driver.
 Lower loads on to adequate batterns to prevent damage to the slings.
 Return slings to store after the job is completed.
Chains
 Select the right chain for the job. If in doubt, ask.
 Check chains before using. Report any chain with deformed, corroded, cracked or cut
links and do not use it.
 Make sure that the chain is marked with its safe working load; do not exceed it.
 Make sure the chain is the correct colour coding for the period approved.
 Make sure that the chain is not kinked or twisted.
 Immediately after use, return chains to store so they can be properly stored.
 Use packing for chain slings when lifting anything with sharp edges.

 Do not shorten a chain knotting it.

 Do not lengthen a chain by joining pieces together.
 Do not hammer a chain down on to a load.
 Do not drop chains on hard surfaces.
 Do not leave chains where they can be run over or otherwise ill-treated.
 Do not expose chains to acids or other corrosive substances.
Hoists
 Never ride on material hoist.
 Never exceed the safe working load (SWL) of a hoist.
 Landing place gates must be kept clear at all times except to allow the passage of
materials or people, and always close landing place gates immediately after use.
 Keep landing places and hoist platforms clear of materials, tools and rubbish.
 Do not operate a hoist unless you have been trained and authorised to do so.
 Never place loose materials on a hoist platform unless it is enclosed or there is some
other means of preventing the materials from falling.
 Never allow unsecured trucks or wheel-barrows to be carried on a hoist and never allow
loaded trucks or wheelbarrows to be carried on open platforms unless the load is
secured.
 Always position the handles of a wheelbarrow so that it can be removed at a landing
place without walking onto the hoist platform.
 When signalling to the hoist operator, always make sure your signals can be easily seen
or heard.
Hooks
 Checks for distortion. If in doubt, check dimensions against standard tables or drawing.
 If a hook has opened by more than 1/5th of original dimension, destroy it.
 Examine carefully for cracks, cuts, dents and corrosion pits.
 Swivel hooks should rotate freely. Nut, securing hook to trunnion should be split-pinned
or otherwise secured.
 If swivel hook is welded in trunnion, check shank for excessive wear and the weld for
deterioration.
 Always fit safety catches on hooks. Make sure they operate freely.
Eye Bolts
 Examine for damaged threads. If in doubt, check with thread gauge.
 Check thread. Only metric eye bolts in metric threaded holes.
 Shoulder or collar should be flat, free from damage, and at right angles to threaded
portion.
 Check that centre line of eye is central with threaded portion.
