ERECTION STANDARD
HANDLING
1 - SCOPE
2 - HANDLING PRECAUTIONS
5 - SAFETY
APPENDICES :
- At arrival on Site
- On the storage yards
- When bringing the equipment to the erection area
- During erection period
It defines :
- The handling of special components for which reference to the erection procedures is required.
2 HANDLING PRECAUTIONS
21 General
- The lifting appliances used must be adapted to the volume and weight of the various pieces to
be put into place.
- If equipment is delivered on pallets, tie the slings onto the pallets and not onto the piece of
equipment.
- For non-metal pieces and components, use protection means to avoid scratches or the like.
- Prevent the equipment from being upturned as compared to their normal transport position.
GGG/00/M/MCE---/EG/011 C 2
22 Main type of components
Condenser :
- Tubes : use a lifting beam with slings suitably arranged to transport cases without deforming
them. Lay the cases down onto several supports to reduce deformations to the minimum. Case
stacking must comply with the instructions shown on cases.
- Tube plates : use the handling frames, if any. If not, make prior arrangements for avoiding any
deformation.
- Follow the constructor instruction.
Tanks :
- These are to be handled in their operating position. Take care of pipes and supporting lugs.
Rotating machines
In the case of a motor-pump set delivered on a frame, using the electric motor lifting ring to raise
the whole is prohibited, in particular.
Use the slinging points specified by the Manufacturer, if any. In any case, all handling operations
must take support at frame level.
Valves
Piping
31 Slinging
- The sling length shall be chosen according to piece dimensions to permit safe fastening at an
appropriate angle. The angle formed by both sling strands must not exceed 60°, in general.
- Make sure that both strands have the same length.
- Use the slinging points specified by the Manufacturer. If the equipment does not include any
slinging point, place the slings around the body. Slings must not be tied onto a pipe or onto the
bolted cover of an opening.
- Slings are to be suitably placed so as to balance the load. Take account of the possible
unbalance of the piece to be handled.
- Protect the slings at the shart edges of components by inserting the appropriate protection
means (wood, leather, adapted pieces,...).
- Make sure that slings or cable lugs are inserted well into the lifting appliance hook and that the
hook safety device is effectively in place.
GGG/00/M/MCE---/EG/011 C 3
- Tighten the slings progressively and raise the load a few centimetres to check fastening and
balance. If the load is not normally balanced, lay it down on the ground and modify the slings
and/or their position so that the load is absolutely stable. Take care not to touch slings when
tightening them because of serious accident hazards (such as getting fingers trapped, whipped,
lashed, etc...).
IT IS PROHIBITED TO :
- Use a sling which no longer has its ring or tag giving the useful capacity.
- Use a sling beyond the limit-dates specified during the last check performed.
32 Lifting appliances
These instructions apply to mechanically driven hook-lift appliances controlled from ground level or
not, such as : pulley block (on a monorail or on a beam), gantry crane, handling jib.
- If the lifting appliance is controlled from a cab, the handling responsible agent alone guides the
operator in compliance with the standard signs. In absence of standard signs defined by the
rules in force, use those shown in Appendix 1.
- Raise the load up to a height sufficient for it to pass over obstacles such as machines,
pieces,etc...
- In case of COMPLETE impossibility, make the load pass over the bays.
- Do not precede the load during its transport. It is better to follow is so as to survey the handling
operation without risking stumbling backwards over an obstacle.
- Perform only one handling operation at a time and avoid jerks during startup and braking.
- Stop travel of the load just above the specified place. Never swing the load to lay it down onto a
place not normally accessible.
- Where necessary, use wedges to make the load rest thereon so as to facilitate sling removal.
- Lay the load down again slowly and loosen the slings to make sure that the load is quite stable.
- Remove the slings or, if need be, bring them back onto the hook to prevent them from striking
anything when the lifting appliance moves empty.
IT IS PROHIBITED TO :
- Climb upon a load and to hang from the slings during the handling operation.
- Pass over persons with a load however litle it may be. Notify them to move aside.
GGG/00/M/MCE---/EG/011 C 4
33 Trucks carrying the operator
- Loosen and lower the load before beginning any handling or circulation operation
- Transport the loads with the forks lowered and the uprights leaned backwards
- Before laying a load down, make sure there is no staff or obstacle present at the place intended
for it
- Do not stop or pass under a fork in high position, even if it is not loaded
IT IS PROHIBITED TO :
- Transport gas cylinders without any safety system preventing the cylinders from falling
- Raise a load without knowing the distance between load center and the heel of the forks
- Use prolonged forks if the new capacity of the truck is not defined and clearly specified
thereon.
41 Slings
BEFORE USE :
- Check the weight of the piece to be handled. Otherwise, estimate it very amply.
- In the case of composite pieces, add the weight of upper and low parts.
- Determine the nature of the sling and the fastening mode suitable for the load to be handled.
The slings to be used are determined according to load by referring to the table in Appendix 2.
- Inspect each sling and its accessories (bucles, thimbles, rings, etc...).
- Should there be any doubt on a sling (strand broken, dents, etc...), put it aside for inspection.
- If a cable or a rope shows signs of buckling, do not try to untie it by pulling abruptly, which
would cause the cables to untwist and weaken the sling.
GGG/00/M/MCE---/EG/011 C 5
- WEAR GLOVES TO HANDLE THE SLINGS.
AFTER USE :
- Place the slings back on their support, do not leave them on the ground.
- Any trace of humidity or harmful product (acid, etc...) must be cleaned by means of a greasy rag
for metal slings and chains and by means of a dry rag for textile slings.
- Make sure that the rings or tags giving the useful capacity remain fixed on slings. They are the
only means of knowing their capacity.
INSPECTION :
All steel or textile slings must be submitted to a periodic inspection if no regular inspection is
required by the laws in force.
42 Lifting appliances
- Access to the appliances is by means of stairs or ladders provided for that purpose, with the
appliances in their rest position.
- Lifting appliances can be lubricated, cleaned, maintained and repaired only if the electric power
supply is switched-off and the lifting appliances at "sandstill".
- If moving the lifting appliance appears necessary for special works, these are to be done with
the greatest care.
- If, for any reason, it is necessary to remove the protecting shells, do not forget to replace them
at the end of erection.
- Works performed close to bare live wires and works or runways are to be performed with the
greatest care.
- During the works, a panel specifying "Startup prohibited" must be placed either on the access
way or on the electric control cubicle if gantry crane or handling jib are concerned.
- After the works, make sure that shells and any other protection means are well in their place,
that no tool nor any object is left on appliances, gangways, and runways.
- The lifting appliances or accessories that have been submitted to dismantling, modification or
repair can be used again only after satisfying the regulations in force.
GGG/00/M/MCE---/EG/011 C 6
Power
Steam Power Plant
Power Plant
BEFORE USE :
- Check its appearance visually (tyres, fork arm interlocking, absence of leak).
- Check correct load-free operation of the control systems (brakes, horn, lifting devices).
AFTER USE :
- After major repair or modification the truck shall be inspected in compliance with the rules in
force before being used again
INSPECTION :
5 SAFETY
For safety reasons, use of a handling or lifting appliance (either static or mobile) on the job site is
strictly prohibited if it has not been approved by the appropriate authorities and if it has not been
submitted to the various periodic inspections in compliance with the local rules in force.
2 - STRAND SLINGS
Note : The maximum load for each simple strand is equal to half the load mentioned above.
