QUESTIONS AND PROBLEMS:

1. What are the principal characteristics of a series D.C. motor?
2. How can be the direction of the rotation of a series motor reverse?
3. Why will a series motor overspeed when it started at no-load? Explain fully.
4. What is the main reason why a series motor has the starting torque compared to all other
D.C. or A.C. motors?
5. What are the uses or applications of the series D.C. motor based on its principal
characteristics?

Answers to Questions:
1.) The principal characteristics of a series D.C.
motor are the;
torque vs Armature current
speed vs Armature current
speed vs torque.
2.) Change the direction of the current in the series
field or armature.
3.) At low current and armature, it has tendency to
rotate dangerously high speed based on the
characteristics.
4.) The higher the armature or load current, higher
the torque that will saturate the magnetic flux.
5.) Cranes, Hoist, and traction type loads.
Interpretation of Results
Objective: To investigate the relationships between the
speed, the output power and the efficiency of a DC
series motor and the
torque produced by the motor.
 The speed is directly proportional to the torque, as
torques increases so does speed

 The power output is also varying directly with the

torque

 The efficiency increases with the torque; They are

directly proportional.

 The speed is inversely proportional to the flux per

pole and flux per pole is directly proportional to
armature current.

 The speed, power output, efficiency , and torque are

being related to armature current

Conclusion
Objective: To investigate the Relationship between the
speed, the output power and the efficiency of a DC
shunt motor and the torque produced by the motor.

 The relationship between speed, power output,

efficiency, and torque are directly proportional
with each other.

 All of them are related by the armature current.

 Series D.C. motors never operates at no-load
because it dangerously rotates at high speed
