In the script for a new disaster film, a city with 500,000 inhabitants is threatened by a
large boulder that risks slipping down from the nearby mountain and crushing large
parts of the city. The hero in the film manages to save the city by taking water from
the river and directing a jet of water parallel to the mountain slope towards the
threatening boulder so that it lies still. The mountain has a slope of 20 degrees.
Available water volume is 250L / s. At what speed must the water hit the rock block
for it to lie still?

To land a space probe on Mars, you slow down the space probe that will land with a
parachute, but it is not so easy as Mars has a thin atmosphere. In addition, the parachute
should also be quite durable as a space probe can have high speeds when it is about to start
braking. The density in Mars' atmosphere is 0.015 kg / m3. The gravitational acceleration on
Mars is 38% of the gravitational acceleration on Earth and the space probe has a mass of
1000 kg. The parachute has a Cd = 1.12.
a) Estimate what final speed the space probe can brake with a parachute with a diameter of 17
m (the last bit it is braked with brake rockets). The probe's own resistance is negligible
compared to the parachute.
b) What would the final speed be under conditions prevailing on earth?

In a pipe bend of the kind most commonly found in academic problems, a water jet is bent.
The pipe bend is in A welded to another pipe and in B releases the water to the atmosphere at
an angle of 30 degrees to the horizontal plane. The volume flow is 20L / s. The diameter of
the pipe bend in A = 0.08 m and in B = 0.06 m. The pipe bend weighs 5 kg and includes
water can be assumed to have negligible frictional forces / pressure losses. The height
difference between inlet in A and outlet in B is 0.4 m. The flow can be assumed to be
turbulent in the pipe. Determine the resulting force in the weld joint A (size and direction).

A new hamburger chain in Oregon has started with home delivery of burgers. On their home
delivery car, they therefore want a billboard for their burgers. The plate consists of a thin
smooth plate with the dimensions 0.5x1.5 m. The manager considers whether it is best to
mount the plate across the car's longitudinal direction (left picture) or parallel (right picture).
A) Calculate the air resistance (in N) of only the plate in the two mounting cases (across and
parallel to the car) at a speed of 60 km / h
b) Calculate the total air resistance in newtons of both car and plate in the two cases if the car
(without plate) has a CD of 0.30 and a frontal area of 2.8 m2.
c) Calculate the power required to drive the car at 60 km / h in both cases. Assume that the
car also has a rolling resistance of 160 N in both cases.

Stina manages to cycle at a maximum of 10 m / s on a flat road, there is no wind. Suddenly it

blows up and she gets a headwind of 10 m / s. Assume that the rolling resistance is negligible.
a) How fast can she cycle to the maximum against the wind? (Assume that she can develop
the same effect as in still wind)
b) Why is the answer not 10-10 = 0 m / s?
