Free-Body Diagrams. The free-body diagrams of the enti.re rrame

and each of its members are shown in Fig. 6-29b.

Equations of Equilibrium. The eight unknowns can of course be
obtained by applying the eight equilibrium equations to each
member - three to member AB, three to member BCD, and iwo to
the disk. (Moment equilibrium is automatically satisfied for the disk.}
Tf this is clone. however. all the results can be obtained only from a
simultaneous solution of so me of the equations. (Try it and [ind oul.)
To avoid this situation. it is best firsl LO determine tl1c three support
reactions 011 the emire frame: then. using these results. the remaining
five equilibrium equations can be applied to two olher parts in order

.
f
to solve successively for the other unknowns.

SOLUTION

Free-Body Diagrams. The free-body diagram of pulley D, along with

the cylinder and a portion of the cord (a system). is shown in Fig. 6-33h.
Member BC is a two-force member as indicated by its f:ree-body
diagram. The free-body diagram of member A BO is also shown.

Equations of Equilibrium. We will begi n by analyzing the

equilibrium o( the pulley. The moment equation of equilibrium is
automa1 ically satisfied with T =50(9.81) N, and so
.±. !.F, = O; Dx - 50(9.SL) N = 0 D , = 490.5 N
+ f 2-F,,. = O; D>- 50(9.81) N = 0 Dy = 490.5 N Ans.
Using these resuhs. Fae can be detcnnincd by summing momen1s
abo ut point A on member ABO.
<:+ "i.M A = O; Fae (0.6 m) + 490.5 N(0.9 m) - 490.5 N(J .20 m) = 0
F oc = 245.25 N A11s.

Now A. and A ,,can be detem1ined by summing forc.-es .

.±.2.F_, = O; .Ax - 245.25N - 490.5N = 0 A,. = 736N An~.
+12.Fy =O: Ay -490.5N=O A,. =490.5N A11s.
