Homework 4

PO1TF 2016

Problem 1. A frame ABC is supported in part by cable DBE that passes through a frictionless ring at B.
Knowing that the tension in the cable is 385 N, determine the components of the force exerted by
the cable on (a) the support at D, (b) the support at E.
Problem 2. The ends of the three cables are attached to a ring at A and to the edge of a uniform 150-kg plate.
Determine the tension in each of the cables for equilibrium.

Problem 3. Collars A and B are connected by a 25 cm long wire and can slide freely on frictionless rods. If a
60 N force Q is applied to collar B as shown, determine (a) the tension in the wire when x = 9 cm,
(b) the corresponding magnitude of the force P required to maintain the equilibrium of the system.
PROBLEM 2.85

A frame ABC is supported in part by cable DBE that

passes through a frictionless ring at B. Knowing that the
tension in the cable is 385 N, determine the components
of the force exerted by the cable on the support at D.

SOLUTION

DB = (480 mm)i − (510 mm) j + (320 mm)k
DB = (480 mm)2 + (510 mm 2 ) + (320 mm)2
= 770 mm
F = F λ DB

For the frame and cable of Problem 2.85, determine the

components of the force exerted by the cable on the
support at E.

PROBLEM 2.85 A frame ABC is supported in part by

cable DBE that passes through a frictionless ring at B.
Knowing that the tension in the cable is 385 N, determine
the components of the force exerted by the cable on the
support at D.

EB = (270 mm)2 + (400 mm)2 + (600 mm)2
= 770 mm
