The maximum and minimum distances of a comet from the sun are 1.

4x 1014 m
and 7x 1018 m respectively. The velocity of the comet when is is nearest to the
sun is 6x 10 m/s. What will be its velocity when it is farthest from the sun,
assuming that in both positions, the comet is moving in circular orbits ?

Ans:

In this case

GM/r12 = v12/r12 ------------------------(1)

GM/r22 = v22/r22 ------------------------(2)

And Dividing (1) by (2)

r22/r12 = (v12/v22) [r2/r1]

v22 = v12(r1/r2)

v2 = v1(r1/r2)1/2

Hence

v1= 6x 104 m/s

18
r1 =
 7x 10 m
14
r2 =
 1.4x 10 m

v2 = (6x 104)
