1. Design a concrete gravity dam for the following data: Maximum allowable compressive
stress in concrete=3000KN/m2, Maximum reservoir level=200.0 m, R.L of bottom of
dam=100.0m, Specific gravity of concrete=2.4 and Unit weight of water=10kN/m3
2. Determination of the cross sectional profile of concrete gravity dam for the following
data and plot the profile by the Single Step Method of Design: Maximum water depth to
be retained(h)= 45m, Tail water depth(h)=0, Top (or crest) width, L=4m,Unit weight of
concrete,=25KN/m3 , Unit weight of water,=10KN/m3, Uplift intensity factor,=1.0,
Allowable coefficient of friction within concrete and between concrete and
foundation(f)=0.65, Ultimate shear resistance of dam and foundation, Sa=4MPa,
Minimum permissible shear friction safety factor (S.F.F)=5, Wind velocity over
water(U)=100Km/h and Fetch length(F)=30Km and Maximum allowable inclined stress
in dam or foundation =3MPa
3. For the profile of a gravity dam shown in Fig.1, compute principal stresses for usual
loading and vertical stresses for extreme loading at the heel and toe of the base of the
dam. Also determine factors of safety against overturning and sliding as well as shear-
friction factors of safety for usual loading and extreme loading (with drains inoperative)
conditions. Consider only downward earthquake acceleration for extreme loading
condition. Sediment is deposited to a height of 15 m in the reservoir. Other data are as
follows: Coefficient of shear friction (µ)= 0.7 (usual loading) Coefficient of shear friction
( µ)= = 0.85 (extreme loading) Shear strength at concrete-rock contact(C)= 150 ×
104 N/m2 , Weight density of concrete = 2.4 × 104 N/m3

4. A rectangular masonry dam is 3m at the base. compute the maximum permissible


height(H) at
i. When no tension is permitted
ii. When factor of safety against sliding is 1.5 if friction coefficient (μ)=0.5 and
density of masonry is 24 times density of water.
iii. If uplift is neglected.
5. A masonry dam 10m high is trapezoidal in sections with a top width of 1 m and bottom
width of 8.25m, and the face exposed to water has a batter of 1:10.
i. Test the stability of the dam.
ii. Find out the principal stresses at the toe and heel of the dam. Assume unit weight
of water is 9.81KN/m3 and unit weight of masonry is 24KN/M 3 and permissible
shear stress of joint=1400KN/m2
6. Design a non-overflow concrete gravity dam by the Multiple-Step Method using the
following data.
Depth of headwater(Hmax)= 60m, spillway crest to MWL(he)=3m, tail water negligible,
Weight density of concrete = 24K N/m3, Weight density of water = 10K N/m3, minimum
top width is 7.5m, friction coefficient is 0.75, shear strength= 560kPa, shear safety
factor=5, uplift factor=0.5, uplift area factor=1, concrete ultimate strength=30MPa, fetch
length =6.4 km and wind velocity 128Km/hr. ignore earthquake and silt pressure effects.
7. Design a non-overflow gravity dam by the Single-step method using the following data:
Depth of headwater(Hmax)= 45m, spillway crest to MWL(he)=3m, tail water is
negligible, Weight density of concrete = 24K N/m3, Weight density of water = 10K N/m3,
minimum top width is 7.5m, friction coefficient is 0.75, shear strength= 4.5MPa, shear
safety factor=5, uplift factor=0.5, uplift area factor=1, concrete ultimate strength=30MPa,
fetch length =5Km and wind velocity 128Km/hr.
8. Design a non-overflow gravity dam by the Single-step method using the following data
considering earthquake and silt pressure.
Depth of headwater(Hmax)= 45m, spillway crest to MWL(he)=3m, tail water is
negligible, depth of silt-water mixture(Hs) =4m, specific gravity of silt(Ss)= 1.5 m,
horizontal silt water pressure=14KN/m2, earthquake factor=0.12,
Weight density of concrete = 24K N/m , Weight density of water = 10K N/m3, minimum

top width is 7.5m, friction coefficient is 0.75, shear strength= 4.5MPa, shear safety
factor=5, uplift factor=0.5, uplift area factor=1, concrete ultimate strength=30MPa, fetch
length =5Km and wind velocity 128Km/hr.

9. Design a 100mheight constant radius arch dam, by the thin cylinder theory for a valley
100 m wide at the base and 150m wide at a height of 100m and compressive stress
=4MPa.
10. Design a 100m high constant angle arch dam by thin cylinder theory for a valley 40m
wide at the base and 240m wide at a height of 100m. Take σall = 5MPa.
11. Design a 55m high constant angle arch dam, by the thin cylinder theory, for a valley 12m
wide at base and 68m at a height of 55m. Draw to scale the plan and section on the
centerline of the dam. Take σall= 200t/m2.
12. An earth dam made of a homogeneous material has a horizontal filter and other
parameters as shown in the fig.2.

i. Determine the phreatic line and the seepage quantity through the body of the
dam.
ii. Analysis of upstream and downstream slopes stability by Swedish Circle
method
13. Determine the size of the bed material for the embankment dam with the grain size

14. A homogeneous earth dam has the following data:


Height of the dam=20m, top width of dam=6m, U/S slope=4:1, D/S slope=3:1, length of
d/s horizontal filter is equal with height of dam and free board=2m.
Properties of the material of the dam: dry density is 17.27KN/m3, optimum water content
is 15%, saturated density=21.19KN/m3, average unit weight under steady
seepage=19.62KN/m3, average angle of internal friction=260, average

cohesion=19.13KN/m2 and coefficient of permeability =5*10 cm/sec.
Properties of the foundation material: average unit weight =17.27KN/m3, average
cohesion =47.87KN/m2, average angle of internal friction=8 0, the foundation material
consists of 6 m thick layer of clay and coefficient of permeability is negligible. If
permissible factor of safety of slope=1.5 and permissible seepage=8*10-6 cumecs, Hence,
Check the section for:
i. Stability of d/s slope against steady seepage
ii. Sloughing of u/s slope against sudden drawdown
iii. Stability of the foundations against shear
iv. Seepage through the body of dam.
