Reporting

The third session of OD&CM was about chapter 3, The Organization Development

Practitioner. As the chapter name suggests, we studies about who an OD

practitioner is? What are the essential characteristics of an OD practitioner? What

are the necessary competencies required of an effective OD Practitioner? What are

the key roles an OD practitioner performs and what are the ethical conflicts an OD

Practitioner faces?

We studied and learnt that OD practitioners are basically set of people who are

specialized in OD and could be internal or external. The core competencies are

quite basic; i.e. intrapersonal skills, interpersonal skills, general consultation skills

& organization development theory. As it could be internal or external it varies in

the competencies and the roles it may perform. Position matters, if the OD

practitioner is from external source, he will be unbiased and will work in favor of

the organization. The only issue here is that he/she might not be well aware of the

organization’s internal organization, same goes for the OD practitioner from inside

the organization, he/she is well aware of the organization’s internal environment

but may be influenced by biasness. The OD practitioner must straddle the

boundaries and bring neutrality and flexibility. He/She must be emotionally

intelligent and must have strong emotional grip.

We discussed about the professional ethics and ethical dilemmas attached to being

OD practitioner. And we discussed the Model of Ethical Dilemmas.

Overall the lecture has taught us about who is an organizational development

practitioner and what roles he performs and how he treats with ethical conflicts.

Relating

I could relate to it as I work in a MNC (Unilever Pakistan Limited) and the

company has hired some external as well as internal OD practitioners. Who work

collectively and keep on bringing change within the organization. They work

together and in favor of Unilever Pakistan.

Very recently, to cope up with the current pandemic situation, the company hired

external OD practitioner. And along with the help of internal managers they

devised a plan of change and organizational development and executed it well and

have succeeded in achieving mutual goals.

Reasoning

The highlights of the session were primarily the CORE COMPETENCIES OF

OD PRACTITIONER and then the ROLES DEMANDS on OD

PRACTITIONER.

One of the core highlights of the session were the Client vs. Consultant

knowledge. The use of consultant’s knowledge and the use of client’s knowledge

and experience.

The third main highlight of the session were the PROFESIONAL ETHICS and

PROFESSIONAL VALUES.

Reconstructing

The whole session has been very productive and has provided me and my

classmates about the importance of having an OD practitioner can be quite helpful

and the characteristics of an OD practitioner. So an OD Practitioner can be internal

and external, and must be competent enough, well aware, ability to work with

different people and work on a shared common goal.

The entire session was interactive and was very useful for all of us. Looking

forward to next sessions.
