MATERIALS:

5-beaker: 250 mL, 100 mL

Graduated cylinder: 50 mL, 10 mL
5-stirring rod
Thermometer
Water bath
3-Pipet: 10mL, 1mL

CHEMICALS:
acetic acid-sodium acetate buffer (0.50M-0.50M)
hydrogen peroxide (0.25M)
potassium iodide (0.30M)
sodium thiosulfate (0.020M)
starch solution

PROCEDURE:
I. Preparation of Test Solutions of Varying Concentrations
In a clean 250-ml beaker, test solutions shall be prepared one at a time according to the
following table. Respective amounts of KI and Na2S2O3 shall be measured through a pipet then the
solution will be stirred thoroughly and will be placed in a tap water-bath.

Table 1. Composition of Test Solutions

Test Solution A Solution B
Solution Distilled H2O, Buffer, KI, Starch sol,n, Na2S2O3, H2O2
mL mL mL mL mL (0.25M), mL
1 30.70 6.30 2.50 0.50 2.50 7.50
2 28.20 6.30 5.00 0.50 2.50 7.50
3 25.70 6.30 7.50 0.50 2.50 7.50
4 20.70 6.30 7.50 0.50 2.50 12.50
5 15.70 6.30 7.50 0.50 2.50 17.50

II. Determination of Reaction Time

1. A 7.50mL of 0.25M H2O2 (solution B: test solution 1) shall be measured and placed into a 100-mL
beaker and will be allowed to establish thermal equilibrium by placing it in a water bath for 2 minutes.
2. The beaker shall then be placed in a white sheet of paper to easily detect the change in color.
3. Timing of the reaction shall start after adding H2O2 is added to solution A (test solution 1) while
stirring the mixture until its color changes to deep blue. The time of reaction will then be recorded to
the nearest seconds.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 using the volumes of different reagents indicated in Table 1.

III. CALCULATIONS
1. According to the equation
2S2O32- + I2 2I- + S4O62-,
2-
the moles of S2O3 consumed in the reaction can be calculated. The moles of I 2 formed in the reaction
is equal to one-half of the moles of S2O32- . The number of I2 moles over the elapsed time shall then be
recorded.
2. From the values obtained in no. 1, the reaction rate can then be calculated through the following
equation
reaction rate= moles I2 produced/reaction time
3. Initial molarity of I- and H2O2 and their corresponding logarithms for each solution shall be
calculated.
