The Electronic Control Unit (ECU), located in passenger side kick panel, has a microprocessor that
receives signals from various input devices regarding engine operating conditions. This information
will be evaluated in relation to pre-programmed values and it calculates the optimal injector
frequency (opening duration) to provide optimal air/fuel mixture, performance, driveability and
emissions output.
^ Ignition switch signal. ^ Oxygen sensor (lambda sond) signal. ^ Engine speed (RPM) signal from
the ignition control unit. ^ Coolant temperature signal. ^ Air mass meter signal. ^ Throttle position
signal.
^ System relay ground. ^ Suppressor relay via the system relay. ^ Fuel injector ground. ^ Idle air
valve. ^ Air mass meter signal to the ignition system control unit (ignition ECU input device). ^ Shift
indicator light.
START-UP PROGRAM:
The cold engine start-up program provides for two injection periods per revolution. When the
engine reaches operating temperature, the ECU uses provides one injection period per revolution.
WARM-UP PROGRAM:
This program provides a richer air/fuel mixture until the engine coolant has reached a moderate
temperature.
During normal driving, the ECU uses various input devices (mostly the air mass meter signal) to
regulate injection frequency.

THIS SERVICE MANAGER BULLETIN IS APPLICABLE TO BOTH THE U.S. AND CANADA.
In the event that difficult cold starting with B230F non-turbo engines in 1985 and early 1986 models
is experienced at extremely cold ambient temperatures (below 0~F -18~C), information on how to
rectify this condition is outlined in Service Bulletin Gr. 23 No. 123 of November, 1985. It is
extremely important that the new LH-control unit, P/N 5003607-8, listed in the above mentioned
Service Bulletin is installed. This control unit has been developed to improve the startability at very
low temperatures.
Warranty procedures for this operation is outlined in Service Manager Bulletin Gr. 23 No. 11 of
December, 1985.

2. Connect a suitable jumper wire between thermal switch electrical connector terminals. Do not
disconnect electrical connector.
3. With jumper wire properly installed, the engine cooling fan should activate.
4. If fan does not operate, visually check relay, relay wiring and electrical connector for open and/or
short circuits, relay for correct installation, incorrectly grounded and/or damaged electrical
connector. After conducting repairs on either the wiring, relay or electrical connector, repeat step 3.
5. If fan still does not operate, replace relay and repeat test procedure.

The cable terminal P/N 1398314-3 is being withdrawn and replaced by cable terminal P/N
9441576-7.
In cars with a Chrysler ignition control module (1CM) (P/N 3517641) some contact pins have a
sleeve. This sleeve must be removed if the cable terminal on the ignition control module (1CM)
cable harness is replaced.
Pull the sleeve on the contact pin to be connected to the new cable terminal type straight up.
Page 157
The control unit is programmed with a series of specific settings for a number of defined speeds
and engine loads. These settings are stored in the ECU as an "ignition map". This means the
timing can be controlled to the accuracy of a fraction of a degree. The ignition ECU will adjust the
timing according to this "ignition map" at all times under all engine loads (except engine knock).
ANTI-KNOCK PROGRAM:
Knock causes high and dangerous combustion temperatures. The ignition system will first retard
the timing in approx. 2.8° increments (to a maximum of 9.8°) to reduce knock. If knock persists, the
fuel injection system will provide a richer air/fuel mixture to eliminate the knocking problem. When
the knock problem has been eliminated, the ignition ECU will advance the timing in 0.37° steps
until the normal setting has been restored or knock reoccurs.
RPM LIMITER PROGRAM: At excess RPM the ignition is interrupted to keep the engine from
overrevving.
When the engine coolant rises above safe operation temperature, the ignition ECU will advance the
timing by 13° if at idle. STANDING CURRENT PROTECTION FUNCTION:
To avoid overheating the coil when the ignition is ON and the engine off, a separate circuit
interrupts the current to the coil. The ECU uses the engine speed and position signal to determine
if the engine is running or at rest.

Engine Control Module: Description and Operation Ignition
Ignition System And Components
This ignition is based on the fully electronically controlled Bosch hall-effect ignition system with
knock control (EZ-K). The ECU, located under instrument panel (above gas pedal to the right),
uses electrical input signals from various devices and sensors to calculate the engine load and
condition. With this information the ECU will adjust the ignition timing to provide optimal
performance, driveability and emissions output.
^ Ignition switch signal. ^ Crankshaft position and speed (hall-effect) signal. ^ Knock signal. ^ Air
mass meter signal from fuel injection control unit. ^ Throttle position signal. ^ A/C control signal
from climate control panel. ^ A/C pressure sensor signal.
^ Power stage. ^ Engine speed (RPM) signal to the fuel injection control unit (fuel injection ECU
input device). ^ Knock signal to the fuel injection control unit (fuel injection ECU input device). ^

Page 155
FULL LOAD AND ACCELERATION PROGRAM:
During full load or acceleration, a richer air/fuel mixture is provided to achieve maximum engine
power. This will also keep combustion heat and catalytic converter temperature at an acceptable
level.
In time, normal use, wear and coatings will affect the operation of the throttle valve causing less air
to enter the intake system. The ECU will adjust the idle speed to these conditions as well as the
current engine load (A/C operation, headlights....).
The lambda sond (oxygen sensor) operates in a similar fashion. It senses if the air/fuel mixture is
rich or lean and the ECU adjusts the fuel injector duration accordingly. This self-regulating function
keeps the air/fuel mixture at a constant midpoint.
EMERGENCY FUNCTION:
There is a "limp home" mode provided when the signal from the air mass meter ceases for some
reason (hot wire defect, wiring....). This pre-programmed mode will set the fuel injection frequency
(opening duration) so the vehicle can be slowly driven to the repair shop.
