Introduction of Zero Energy Cool Chambers

Zero Energy Cool Chamber being a cost-effective, ecofriendly technology of post-harvest
storage which saves more amount of as well as vegetables and fruits quality also get enhanced
through elongation of shelf life, preventing possible injuries by reducing field heat effectively.
IARI from Pusa, New Delhi has developed the ZECC technology (Roy & Khurdiya, 1983 as
cited in Devi & Singh, 2018). Materials like brick, sand, bamboo, straw; gunny bag etc. are used
for ZCC construction. The major principle of ZECC is based on evaporative cooling which
means water present in it produces evaporation creating cooling effect within the chamber.
Maintenance of higher relative humidity compared to outside of chamber causes significant fall
in temperature inside the chamber compared to outside room temperature. Devi & Singh (2018)
concluded that freshness of vegetable and fruit crops like cabbage, broccoli tomato, pineapple,
passion fruit and banana can easily be improved as well as physiological weight loss (PWL) can
be reduced as compared to room condition using ZECC. Using of expensive technology for
storing the fruit 7 vegetables is not affordable to Nepalese farmers so use of ZECC could be
boon for farmers.

Overview of Agriculture and Forestry University

Agriculture & Forestry University being first technical university of Nepal was established in
2010 A.D. High skilled man powers that are necessary for improving agriculture system of Nepal
are produed in AFU. Sectors of research, teaching & extension has been followed by AFU in the
field of Agriculture, Forestry, Veterinary, Fisheries, Biotechnology etc.is the major positive

Agriculture and Animal Science (IAAS) and Forestry Campus, Hetauda of the Institute of
Forestry of Tribhuvan University of Nepal were combined together to form Agriculture
&Forestry University. B.Sc. Fisheries of 4 years program, M.Sc. in Biotechnology, M.Sc. in
Weed Science, M.Sc. Seed technology, M.Sc. Agribusiness Management and Ph.D. programs in
Developmental Studies are also added along with available running programs from past
(Agriculture & forestry University, 2019).

Significance of AFU for training

Availability of more than 330 hectare area of University including farms, classrooms,
laboratories, administrative buildings, student hostels, staff quarters, garden, orchards, canteen,
research centres, guest house buildings etc. categorized according to different subject
departments. Agriculture Science Center (ASC) in Palung has been established in 2016 A.D. by
AFU. It is also planning to establish such ASC at Kalikot, Gorkha and Dhading districts of
Nepal. Training and research activities for farmers will be done in this centres for adoption of
new farm technology. At present, Learning Experiential Exposure (LEE) is being run by AFU in
B.Sc.Ag. & B.Sc. Forestry program enhanching the practical skills of undergraduate students.
Students goes in Zones and Super-zones area as per selection done through AFU supported by
Prime Minister Agricultural Modernization Project (PMAMP) of Ministry of Agriculture.
Likewise, Animal Health Camp, Plant clinics and IPM schools in the farmer's field are also being
conducted by AFU frequently. Seed processing plant established by provide good quality seeds
