IT Application Tools in Business Assignment no.1

Everyday, urbanization calls for a change that would improve the day-to-day activity
of mankind. One of these changes was the necessity to upgrade the platform where people
save their personal or massive data, and such platform gave rise to a cloud computing
system.

Cloud computing enables an industry or even a simple person to store his or their
data on a safe software which is far from the hustle of printing an information on a bunch of
papers and storing it to a tangible material which occupies space and requires
maintenance. It also secures multiple copy of our important data to mitigate instances of
security threats, data loss, and data breach. Straightforwardly, Cloud Computing has been
helping us live our life much convenient than the way we used to.

Cloud goes beyond storing data. It can actually be broken down into three main
functions such as (1) Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), (2) Platform as a Service (PaaS), and
(3) Software as a Service (SaaS). The Cloud storage helps large companies in offering a
service they might need such as storing employees’ data, customer’s demographics, as well
as enabling software users to edit and add data on their storage when needed. This has
helped the e-commerce be a business to pursue.

A good Cloud Storage sample is Dropbox. It allows data processing to be done in a

privately owned cloud or a third-party server. It offers a one-stop-platform and most
importantly, it is easy to install and use. It only requires minimum knowledge on the right
input to maximize its full capacity.

It is important to keep in mind that cloud is not pure virtual and while your files may
not be saved directly to your computer, they still need to be attached to some piece of
hardware, somewhere in the world. When you upload something in to the cloud, via a
service like Dropbox, the file will be sent via the internet to a server –a real and tangible
server. Cloud service providers will have hundreds and thousands of physical servers known
as “Server farms,” that are located in data centres around the world.

On the other hand, a major shortcoming of Dropbox is the limitation of the storage it
offers. It can only hold up to 1 terabyte equivalent of files or information. Some users also
address a concern in Dropbox mobile version as it is not flexible as the desktop especially
when downloading large files as they have had issues with slow uploads. Dropbox Company
had security and privacy controversies as well. Issues include a June 2011 authentication
problem that let accounts be accessed for several hours without passwords. (Wikipedia,
2011) It is only one of the issues that Dropbox has faced in the recent years which reflected
to its credibility. The company also suffers from severe competition against competitors
such as Sync, Zoho Docs, and the famous Google Drive. Dropbox must address customers’
concerns to improve their service, to rebuild their credibility ang relationship with its
subscribers, and to cope up with the fast-paced Cloud Computing industry.
