CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM

INTRODUCTION

The development of solar energy goes back more than 100 years. In the

early days, solar energy was used primarily for the production of steam which

could then be used to drive machinery. But it wasn’t, until the discovery of the

“photovoltaic effect” by Edmond Becquerel that would allow the conversion of

sunlight solar electric energy. Becquerel discovery then led to the invention in

1893 by CHARLES FRITTS of the first genuine solar cell which was formed by

coating sheets of selenium with a thin layer of gold. And from this humble

beginning would arise the device we know today as the solar panel.

OHL, R., an American inventor on the payroll of Bell Laboratories,

patented the world’s first silicon solar cell in 1941. OHL’S invention led to the

production of the first solar panel in 1954 by the same company. Solar panels

found their mainstream use in space satellites. For most people, the first solar

panel in their life was probably embedded in their new calculator – circa the

1970s.

Solar panels and complete solar panel systems are used to power a wide

variety of applications. Solar panels in the form of solar cells are still being used

in calculators. However, they are also being used to provide solar power to entire

homes and commercial buildings.

Solar panel are devices that convert light into electricity. It is a flat piece of

equipment that uses the sunlight or heat to create electricity. The solar panel are

made of solar cells. A cell is a small disk of a semi-conductor like silicon. They

are attached by wire to a circuit. As light strikes the semi-conductor, light is

converted into electricity that flows through the circuit. As soon as the light is

removed, the solar cell, stops producing power.

Solar is a self-power. It is placed on the roof and collects information

regarding how much power a full solar panel setup would produce. A solar panel

is a collection of solar cells. Lots of small solar cells spread over a large area can

work together to provide enough power to be useful. The more light that hits a

cell, the more electricity it produces.

They are called solar panels because the most powerful source of the

light, the sun. It was called Sol by astronomers. Some scientists call it

PHOTOVOLTAICS, which means, basically, light-electricity.

Therefore, this study about solar panel will find out the advantages with

regard to beneficial effects of being free of the source of the light in Barangay

Lanigay, Polangui, Albay. With this, study conducted to understand the effects of

using the solar panel as a household energy. Indeed, to be aware and insight the

experience of using solar panel in Barangay Lanigay, Polangui, Albay.

Definitely, the advantages in this study would be visualize the profit of

using solar panel as an electrical source of energy in Barangay Lanigay,

Polangui, Albay. Simultaneously, to conduct the effects of solar panel in any

consumer devices as well as the advantages of connecting solar panel in

appliances directly or alternative current. Hence, the awareness of widespread in

using solar panel will observe after the findings in this study.

The Barangay Lanigay, Polangui, Albay is a huge area to conduct the

study, it is easily to the researcher to gathered information came from them.

Usually, the residents in Barangay Lanigay, Polangui, Albay uses a main source

to function different consumer devices and appliances in the present day.

Because the main source also provide a strong energy and can function a lot of

devices. But, in the present day, there are residents used solar panel as another

source of energy. That’s why the researchers chosen a selected household in

Barangay Lanigay, Polangui, Albay who used solar panel as electrical energy.

The residents in Barangay Lanigay, Polangui, Albay have enough

information to gathered for the purpose of knowing the findings in the present

study. Actually, the selected household in Barangay Lanigay, Polangui, Albay is

certainly uses this renewable energy for their own different purposes. The

residents have experience and knows the effect of solar panel as electrical

source of energy. They are needed to accomplish this study and present the

effect of using solar panel.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This research will understand the products of solar panel as a household

energy of barangay Lanigay, Polangui, Albay.

The following specific problem will be answered.

1. What is the effects of using solar panel as a source of electrical energy of

selected household in barangay Lanigay, Polangui, Albay in terms of:

a) Financial

b) Payment or bill of current

2. What are the common consumer devices function connected to solar

panel?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The researchers wants to know the importance of using solar panel as a

household energy of barangay Lanigay, Polangui, Albay. It was useful to those

who practice using this device. The following are the beneficiary of this study:

 FAMILY-Visualize the benefits and advantages of conducting this study.

Aside from this, it is easy to understand the importance of being aware

herein this study.

 STUDENTS-This study would help them to put in one’s mind the purpose

and significance of this study. To understand the benefits of conducting

the study.

 COMMUNITY-This would helpful in awareness and understanding the

importance of conducting study.

 RESEARCHER-This is useful with other researcher as a guide in

conducting study. Simultaneously, this would be enhancing a knowledge

in this study.

 FUTURE RESEARCHER-This study will useful as a guide in conducting

the future study.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study is concerned in solar panel as a source of electrical energy of

selected household in Barangay Lanigay, Polangui, Albay. This place was largely

used a main source to function different consumer devices or appliances. But in

the present day, the researchers found other source of electricity which is the

solar panel. It is use by some residents in Barangay Lanigay, Polangui, Albay for

their own purpose. Solar panel is usually uses as electrical energy of some

residents in Barangay Lanigay, Polangui, Albay. The researchers chosen this for

the purpose of knowing the effect of using this renewable energy. The

effectiveness of using this to the respondents and to the consumer devices

connected to solar panel as electrical energy of selected household in Barangay

Lanigay, Polangui, Albay.

The researchers chosen the selected household in Barangay Lanigay,

Polangui, Albay because they have enough information to gather by the

researchers. The experience of them in using solar panel is a tough reason why

the researcher choose as the respondents.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

•LED or Light-emitting Diode- is a semi-conductor that emits visible light when

an electric current passes through it. The light is not particularly bright, but in

most LED’s it is monochromatic, occurring at a single wavelength.

•SOLAR CELL- a device that uses light or heat from the sun to produce

electricity.

•PHOTOVOLTAICS- convert light into an electric current using the photovoltaic

effect.

•SOLAR PANEL - a large, flat piece of equipment that uses the sun’s light or

heat to create electricity.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter covers the literature and the studies found to be related to

the present study.

RELATED LITERATURE

Using solar panel is a very practical way to produce electricity for many

applications. It is both clean and a renewable source of energy. Potentially

eliminating monthly electric bills and sustainable energy. Solar panel have long

been a feature the quest for renewable energy and as such feel like a very

modern technology indeed.

According to Becquerel, E. (1839), photovoltaic effect explained how

electricity can be produced from sunlight in the year 1839. Becquerel believe that

“shining light or an electrode submerged in a conductive solution would create an

electric current”. However, even after extensive and exhaustive research and

development for his theory photovoltaic power was still less efficient and solar

cells were used for the purposes of measuring light.

The discovery of the photovoltaic effect, people might have been stuck

on using cells and fossil fuels as a main energy resource. The sun, aside from

being able to help plants grow, keep the skin healthy and a calming a stressed

mind, became one of the most powerful sources of energy, one that may last

mankind until the end of the time.

According to GOSWAMI, Y.,solar energy is such a vast energy

resource that it can be used for any of our everyday needs, including electric

power, heating and cooling, water heating, industrial process heat, cooking,

transportation, fuel production and even environmental clean. It comes to us as

radiation which is pure energy (no mass associated with it), which is the highest

form of energy and can be converted to many other forms for our everyday use.

A 2017 report from the International Energy Agency shows that solar has

become the world’s fastest –growing sources of power- marking the first time that

solar energy’s growths has surpassed that of all other fuels. In the coming years,

we will be enjoying the benefits of solar-generated electricity in one way or

another.

Solar power is the key to a clean energy future. The sun gives off far more

energy than we need to power everything on earth. No greenhouse gas

emissions are released into the atmosphere when you see solar panels to create

electricity. And because the sun provides more energy than well ever need,

electricity from solar power is a very important energy source in the more to

clean energy production. After solar panels have been installed, operational

costs are quite low compared to other forms of power generation. Fuel isn’t

required, and this means that solar power can create large amounts of electricity

without the uncertainly and expense of securing a fuel supply.

Solar panel is a clean and renewable source of energy. It begins with the

sun. Don’t require any fuels to burn. Solar panels (also known as “PV panels) are

used to convert light from the sun, which is composed of particles of energy

called “photons”, into electricity that can be used to power electrical loads. Solar

is the fastest growing, and almost everyone can learn to capture the power to

perform tasks like cooking, lightning, heating and many other household chores.

Two of the key reasons many invest in harnessing the sun is to get energy for

heating water in homes and to generate electricity.

RELATED STUDIES

Solar energy has experienced phenomenal growth in recent years due to

both technological improvement resulting in cost reductions and government

policies supportive of renewable energy development and utilization. This study

analyzes the technical, economic and policy aspects of solar energy

development and deployment. While the cost of solar energy has declined rapidly

in the recent past, it still remains much higher than the cost of conventional

energy technologies, solar energy benefits from fiscal and regulatory incentives

and mandates including tax credits , feed-in-tariff, preferential interests rates,

renewable portfolio standards and voluntary green power programs in many

countries.

Solar energy has resource potential that far exceeds the entire global

energy demand (KUROKAWA et al 2007). Despite this technical potential and

the recent growth of the market, the contribution of the solar energy to the global

energy supply mix is still negligible (IEA, 2009). This study attempt to address

why the role of solar energy in meeting the global energy supply mix continues to

be so a small.

A number of studies, including ARVIZU et al (2011), have addressed

various issue related to solar energy. This study presents a synthesis review of

existing solar energy literature as well as presents economic analysis to examine

competitiveness solar energy with fossil energy counterparts.

Physically, solar energy constitutes the most abundant renewable energy

resource available and, in most regions of the world, theoretical potential is far in

excess of the current total primary energy supply in those regions. Solar energy

technologies could help address energy access to rural and remote communities,

help improve long-term-energy security and help greenhouse gas mitigation.

This study will find out the effects of using solar panel as a source of

electrical energy. Hence, to understand the art of solar panel and raise

awareness regarding the benefits. Pick out the significant of efficiency of

conversion in reducing the cost financially, consumer devices, and awareness of

people.

SYNTHESIS OF THE REVIEWED LITERATURE AND STUDIES AND GAP

BRIDGED OF THE STUDY

and studies are related to the present study of the significant of efficiency of

conversion in reducing the cost financially, consumer devices, and awareness of

people.

From the analysis of the related literature and studies, it could be

concluded several things that have been said and many studies have been

conducted on the effects of solar panels as electrical energy. There are related

literature conducted that focuses on the benefits, advantages, and effects of

solar panel. The understanding of photovoltaic solar energy through the present

literature studies in which the following are approached with advantages,

awareness and cost. The studies found on photovoltaic solar energy creating the

need and deeper studies about the effects of this renewable energy. This study

not only benefits individual owners, but also benefit environment as well. The

current study was conducted to determine the effects of solar panel and its

benefits.

RESEARCH DESIGN

This chapter presents the methodology used, the sources of data,

sampling design, statistical instrument used, data gathering procedure used in

the study.

METHODOLOGY

The main purpose of the study was to determine the effect of solar panel

as electrical energy of selected household. Descriptive method was appropriately

used in the study as the research design with the test questionnaire as the main

instrument in gathering data. The descriptive method involves collection of data

in order to answer these questions concerning the effects of solar panel as

electrical energy, consumer devices connecting in this renewable energy and the

awareness of people in spreading this products.

The primary sources of data of this study were taken from the selected

households of Barangay Lanigay, Polangui, Albay with those family who currently

using solar panel as electrical energy. Furthermore, to collect information related

to the study to accomplish the present study.

SAMPLING DESIGN

The target respondents of the study came from the selected household in

Barangay Lanigay, Polangui, Albay for those family who currently using solar

panel as electrical energy. The researchers choose these participants and

respondents because they have enough information to gather that are related to

the study. Since, the products are available and already used with many

household in Barangay Lanigay, Polangui, Albay, it is easy to the researchers to

gathered data from them. Aside from this, the solar panel has a lot of benefits to

the respondents.

DESCRIPTION OF STATISTICAL INSTRUMENT

The researchers used questionnaires as the primary data gathering

instruments in determining the effects of using solar panel as electrical energy,

consumer devices connected with this products as one of renewable energy

source. The questionnaires chosen by the researchers in order to collect facts

and opinions of the respondents about this products. Moreover, it is feasibility,

convenience and quick instruments used to accomplish this study. The

questionnaire composed of questions to answered by the respondents of

selected households in Barangay Lanigay, Polangui, Albay to find out the effect

of solar panel with the devices that connect with this, cost and financial and the

awareness of spreading this products by the respondents .The questionnaires

composed of two sets which is divided with into the affection of products to the

consumer devices and the other one is all about of awareness of people. Inside

the first set of questionnaires, is answerable for what factors may affect the

financial, monthly budget, commonly appliances/consumer devices connected to

solar panel and monthly bill before and after. The last set of questionnaires is

answerable by what is the opinions of respondents to solar panels. The

researchers made also a table for the before and after monthly electric bill,

breakdown of monthly budget and financials. A table of what are the commonly

consumer devices connected to solar panel and a table for the synthesis of

opinions came from the all respondents related in this study.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The study was conducted at Barangay Lanigay, Polangui, Albay. To

conduct this study, the researchers made a letter to the subject teacher of

Practical Research 1 for the permission to gathered information outside of the

school. The researchers made also a letter for every respondents as a

permission to gather information. In gathering data came from them, it will be

answered for several questions combined the first and second set of

questionnaires.

The researchers has a three different table for determining the factors that

may affect by the solar panel as electrical energy.

as what is the reasons behind this happening in using solar panel.

This study used mean in measuring the computation of the sum up the

given data then divide it into respected numbers of data. To know the mean

results of the gathered data. The formula below was used.

PRESENTING, ANALYZING AND INTERPRETING DATA GATHERED

This chapter discussed the results and analysis of the study such as the

effects of using solar panel as electrical energy, cost or financial expenses,

consumer devices function is connected and in their opinions as well as how the

respondents aware in this renewable energy. The data gathered was presenting

according to the analysis with the use of appropriate statistical tools.

I. EFFECTS IN USING SOLAR PANEL AS ELECTRICAL ENERGY

The solar panel is one of renewable energy that uses by selected

household as respondents in a present study. An effect of solar panel is

presented below regarding to the bill of current and payment for the monthly

budget of the participants.

A. BILL OF CURRENT

Table 1.0 presented the before and after of monthly electrical bill as

well as the save amount of selected household in Barangay Lanigay, Polangui,

Albay.

The results shows that resident A and resident B have a decreased in bill

of current in the year of 2017- 2018 compared to the year of 2016-2017. It have

also saved amount by the difference of the previous bill without solar panel and

bill of current with solar panel.

The resident C and resident D has no decreased or increased of bill of

current because they don’t have main source and even if they use solar panel in

a present day, there is no payment because this product is free.

Table 2.0 is presented to show the result of breakdown in monthly budget

of before and after of selected household in Barangay Lanigay, Polangui, Albay.

has a decreased of monthly budget with the year of 2016-2017 that the

participant did not use solar panel compared with the year of 2017-2018 using a

solar panel. It have a save amount that can use with the future expenses.

Since, the resident C and resident D don’t have main source and only

depend on solar panel, their monthly expenses also decreased because they

don’t buy candles, or gas in lamp as light in their home.

panel. This means that only this three consumer devices capable to function. It

depends on the sizes and the light passing through the solar panel.

III. OPINION AND AWARENESS IN ENCOURAGING OTHER PEOPLE TO

USE SOLAR PANEL

This table 4.0 shows the opinion of the respondents about the effects of

and in encouraging others to use solar panel.

According to the respondents, solar panel is alternative source of

energy. In case of brownout, it can be an option to use as source of electrical

energy. It decrease the bill of current because other consumer devices

connected to solar panel instead of using the main source. Being current will

be avoided. Decreases everyday expenses and save amount of money that

will use in emergency situation.

The following are stated by the respondents in terms of encouraging others:

SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE

STUDY

This chapter presents the summary and findings, conclusion, and

recommendations regarding solar panel as electrical energy of selected

household in Barangay Lanigay, Polangui, Albay.

SUMMARY

The main focus of the study was to determine the effects of using solar

panel as electrical energy of selected household in Barangay Lanigay, Polangui,

Albay. The commonly consumer devices connected to solar panel and the

awareness of people in encouraging to use this renewable energy.

The researchers used the descriptive method of research to gathered

more information from the respondents. It used appropriate statistical tool for

clearly understood the data gathered.

The respondents of this study is the selected household in Barangay

Lanigay, Polangui, Albay who currently used solar panel as electrical energy.

The researchers used tables to understand the effects and to determine the

opinions and awareness of the participants. The study was conducted at

Barangay Lanigay, Polangui, Albay last March 1, 2019. The study used the mean

of all selected household. Particularly, the researchers find out the effects of

solar panel gathered information came from them.

FINDINGS

The following are revealed and knows the effect of solar panel after

gathering the data.

Solar panel was widely and very beneficial as renewable energy. It is used

for different purposes of selected household in Barangay Lanigay, Polangui,

Albay as electrical energy.

 Solar panel used for emergency purpose. It is an alternative source of

energy. Usually used by the respondents who don’t have current or main

source. Lastly, to those household who wants to save amount of money.

 Solar panel used by some respondents that have main source for the

purpose of connecting the lighting bulb.

 Some lighting bulb are connected to the solar panel for decreasing the

consumer devices connected to the main source.

 Financially, decrease expenses in monthly budget in their everyday life.

The cost for the payment bill descends according to the results of

comparing the previous fee of current from the present bill.

 The consumer devices that commonly function properly are lighting bulb,

radio and in charging cellphones.

 Solar panel have a different sizes and has its own limitation to function

consumer devices. It depends on the light or heat that passes through

solar panel to function other or additional consumer devices.

 The beneficial effects of solar panel made to encourage other people to

use as a renewable energy. It is the way to save amount of money to use

in other emergency purpose.

Solar panel affects people, consumer devices and financial. Using this

renewable energy decreases the bill of current and cost for everyday life. It

helps to survive for an emergency purposes.

Based on the summary and findings, the research arrived to the following

conclusions.

Solar panel is very helpful especially to those household who don’t have

main source and depends only on it. It is use as alternative source of energy

in case of emergency purposes. The solar panel has a limited consumer

devices like lighting bulb, radio and in charging cellphones because it

depends on the sizes and light or heat passes through the solar panel.

Financially, it decrease the bill of current and save amount of money for other

expenses and gathered savings for the future. The importance and

advantages sees on the facial expressions of the owners. The participants

was not many because nowadays commonly used an electrical main source.

Mostly, household that don’t have main source are used to get of solar panel

as electrical source of energy. But, even though, it is not too many household

used solar panel, it is very helpful for the decreasing expenses of each family

of the selected household in Barangay Lanigay, Polangui, Albay who

currently used solar panel.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the findings and conclusion, the following recommendations are

followed:

 It will be grateful and last longing if the solar panel was big size to

function other and additional consumer devices.

 Place on the area where the light or heat are free to passes through

the solar panel.

 Continue to use this products because it is very helpful for some

emergency purposes.

 Encourage other people to use this and try to know the benefits and

advantages of it.
