Day 1

The beginning

The day before our work immersion began, I wondered to myself. What does work immersion
really means and why are we all required to do it. For as long as I can remember, work means
doing mental or physical effort in order to achieve a purpose or result, working means being
productive and being productive results in success. The word immersion, personally I think it is
aimed to the student’s postsecondary goals, they get exposed to a work-environment so with
those two words combine work immersion is a way of being productive while learning things.
Every human being gets nervous on their first day and so was I, when I first arrived at SMI the
very first thing that comes to my mind is whether I can handle my work immersion or not,
Divine Grace Dela Cruz was our supervisor, we immediately thought she was strict and scary but
it turns out we were wrong, she’s actually pretty sweet and really fun to talk to, she taught us
things that are essential for the kind of work we’re doing, things like basic accounting which is to
list all the company’s income loss and gain, they also taught us the different receipt books.
While doing the task at hand, I imagined my future self working in an office similar to
where I was deployed and wondered if day one gave me a difficult time what about if the
time comes wherein I must start standing up on my own two feet and go face the real world
where men seek for more than what they already have and imagine the obstacles I will soon
come across once I graduate thinking about how my life would turn out 10 or 20 years
from now sent shivers down my spine, being happy-go-lucky will do no good for my future,
that’s why from that day onwards I started endeavoring to secure my future because no
work is easy and for me to have a good life I should work hard to grasp and fulfill my
purpose in order to savor the fruits of my hard work and be proud of it, contemplating my
future somehow gave me some motivation and energy boost so I tried my best to complete
everything but at the end of the day.
No one really did complete all the work, so we had to wrap some things up and finish what’s
need to be done the next day, I also forgot to mention that when our supervisor started discussing
some stuff, our minds were floating and that’s to be expected since day one was boring, everyone
did their own thing and seem to lose interest but as soon as our supervisor shared some of her
experience when she was in college, it immediately piqued our interest, I was like, she sure
knows how to capture our attention, we weren’t pressured or anything because she treated us like
a friend, vice versa.
The abridged version of the first day was full of introduction, they introduced us so many things,
they taught us so many things, the kind of thing you would expect on a first day, perhaps the
most consequential discovery and lesson of the first day is when they taught us how to compute a
checklist, each of us must receive our own checklist receipts and scan all of them, our supervisor
told us to compute for a specific checklist receipts, she gave us the privilege to choose which
month of checklist receipts we will be computing, and that’s how the first day ended, she gave us
a couple of worksheets and said that before day one ends, we should finish the cash receipt books
but then not all of us succeeded so she told us to continue the rest tomorrow because it was
getting late and as long as we have an output, we can finish the cash receipt book tomorrow
without breaking a sweat.

Day 2
Actual work

Day two of work immersion, we continue where we left off yesterday, that time our objective
was to finish the work for the day, it wasn’t easy, I had a hard time finishing my work, not only
me but also my colleagues, I was pretty optimistic that we’d accomplish our task without any
flaws but I was wrong once again. To sum it all up we kind of failed… terribly… we couldn’t do
a proper balance of the credit and debit of the company, our supervisor was unsatisfied and told
us to fix our work, that’s why we spent all day fixing our work, what I said is the summary, what
really happened in day two was, we were lost, our directional dyslexia was aggressive that day, I
mean we all literally had no sense of direction, particularly on that day so we arrived late,
everybody’s doing their own work when we arrived, anyway, we parted ways and I went to my
own work desk, our supervisor handed us our worksheets and just like what happened in day
one, we spent most of our time working, sorting things out, that kind of stuff.
Some of my colleagues finished their work at 11 sharp, while some of them especially those who
are late, they kind of rushed things out because they don’t want to fall behind, they thought they
could finally lift the weight upon their shoulder because they managed to finish the work by
rushing but no, if you rush things out, the chances of getting things wrong is high, our job is not
only about computations, we are also tasked to list the names of the payees, their tin numbers,
their addresses and finally their cash on hand, looking at a paper full of numbers tend to confuse
the eyes of the workers and that’s where they get things wrong.
It is our duty to get the list done accurately so if you ever commit a mistake, you should correct
that mistake and make the list valid, a lot of us fell to the same fate as me, I made an error so it’s
my duty to correct my mistakes, I spent my lunch hour correcting my mistakes, I never had the
chance to eat with my colleagues that day, I was just so absorbed with what I’m doing, I just
want to get it over with.
It took me three attempts to finish the work, while I was working, some of my colleagues kept
pestering me to come with them and eat lunch, if I didn’t make such mistakes, I would gladly
come along with them but I have no choice, so after three attempts I finally managed to correct
my mistakes, everything was balanced, the credit and the debit,
I told my supervisor if I could rest for awhile and eat some food, luckily my supervisor was kind
and considerate enough to allow me take my lunch, after eating my lunch I went back and we all
did the cash disbursement but we obviously didn’t make in time because it was really long.
After finishing day two, I went home to get some rest and prepare myself physically and
mentally for day three.
Day 3
CASH RECEIPT BOOK

Work immersion day three, I arrived there earlier than expected, I was the only one there waiting
for them, so I decided to explore the office thoroughly and I noticed that some of the books they
have weren’t really related to my strand, they have books involving literature, evolution, gods
and goddesses and etc… I decided to read this book which caught my attention, it was about
Vikings and their beliefs, I couldn’t fathom why such tradition existed, I turned the pages and
saw how much they worshiped Odin, Thor, Freya and other Norse gods, they’d offer sacrifices, it
seems that it was always important for the Vikings to be on good terms with the gods and in
order to ensure that this was the case, they made sacrifices, those sacrifices was an exchange in
which they sacrificed to the gods in order to get something back in return, be it may fortune or
death.
I just found the book fascinating, reading a book is a great way to pastime so that’s what I did, I
was enthralled, I never knew that Vikings are interesting, anyway, I checked the time and it was
8:30, they finally arrived, it was like such a cliffhanger because I wanted to read more but I had
to go to work, our supervisor reminded us to enjoy our work, not stress ourselves out, she guided
us throughout the day, especially Jemica and Jhycca, they both had it rough, she tends to work
alongside us and we treated her as one of our own… kind of like a big sister, she’s like a sister
figure to us. No pressure, stress free, it felt like we were dillydallying, because of the not-so
heavy atmosphere, well actually to tell you the truth, the ambience around me seemed lighter
which motivated me to finally accomplished our goal, when I heard about our next job I was like
pulled back from reality that not every job is as easy as you think.
This next job is about listing all the cash received from a company, our objective was to get the
cash receipt of the month, not only that but we also need to list the official receipt number,
acknowledgement receipt number, amount in dollar, cash in bank, other payable, output tax,
service income at zero rated income, it was not an easy task because it was confusing, the
worksheet our supervisor gave us had little boxes in each account title that’s need to be written.

It was so tiny that making a mistake was inevitable, so to avoid further failures, our supervisor
decided to guide us while we were working, she has a great sense of humor and I feel like she
uses it whenever the situation is dire or whatsoever which significantly helps lift the heavy
atmosphere, that’s what I like about her, she also allowed us to help one another for she do not
cancel the other out for their past mistakes, when we guide each other to redemption and that’s
what we did.
Cooperation and teamwork develop and implement systems of change that are beneficial to all
sentient beings, it was effective cause it made the work easier, there were no competitions or
anything and so we finished our work, although some of us were uncertain whether they did the
right thing or not but at the end of the day we finished all of them, our supervisor gave us a price
to keep our spirits high, she’s a clever fellow
Day 4
CASH DISBURSEMENT BOOK

On the fourth day, we did what we’re supposed to, we finished the remaining tasks, I arrived
there earlier than expected as usual because I’m an early bird and a punctual individual, I didn’t
get the chance to finish some things yesterday so I decided to go to the office early to finish my
unfinished business, I want to catch up quickly, it is bad luck to fall behind.
If we managed to finish everything then our job will lessen tomorrow, after finishing my
unfinished business I resumed reading where I left off yesterday about the Vikings, apparently,
Odin wanted know everything and gain wisdom and knowledge of things that are hidden so he
sacrificed himself, he gouged his eye out and threw himself on his spear, it’s symbolic though for
he wishes to unearth something that’s beyond our comprehension and then lastly he hanged
himself in Yggdrasil, aka. The tree of life, then I realized that what happened to him was similar
to that of Jesus Christ on the cross, I was about to flip to the next page when one of my colleague
started interrupting me, he said “it’s time to work bro.” I nodded and said “yeah.”
We talked about a couple of things before work, for me it is important to develop bonds
especially at work so that they could be easy to work with and also to avoid any unnecessary
awkwardness.
Three days had passed and we finally got the hang of it, cash disbursement… done! It was really
difficult but with the power of motivation and an unprecedented level of commitment we
managed to overcome the task that was assigned upon us, we had a blast, probably one of the
most memorable days of my life, we also finished the cash receipts, now that we accomplished
our previous tasks, we now can file a financial statement, which is if the company has gain
anything or not, so our job for tomorrow was to encode the accomplished tasks, to know if our
work was legit and accurate.
Our next job involves financial statement, we had our lunch break, we ate outside because we
wanted to breathe in some fresh air, even the polluted outside seemed fresh to us people because
of our work, even our supervisor couldn’t manage to lessen the heavy ambience in the office, it
was really heavy, it almost felt like I was being drowned, that’s how stressful our work
immersion was, we used our lunch break as an opportunity to look around a little bit, the place of
our workplace and its surroundings, after our little sightseeing tour, we were stuffed from eating
a lot and everyone seemed content so we head back to the office to finish our job.
This time we have to get the financial statement of Century High HR, INC. while we were
working, a guy showed up carrying a DLSR camera, when I first laid eyes on his camera I
immediately knew that he was a photographer, he took a couple of shots, I trusted my gut feeling
that he was zooming on our faces which made me felt incredibly uncomfortable, imagine
someone taking pictures of you while you’re doing something intense, imagine what you would
look like in the photo, anyway, despite of that I tried my best to look good on camera while
dealing with my work.
Our job that day was easier than what I had expected because all we did was write down the total
of the account and list down all the account items written in financial statement, because of it I
saw what the company has gained and their losses for the month of October, after that I
computed for their balances, I was finished but some of my colleagues weren’t, I saw some of
them tearing up because of how stressed they are so those who are finished helped those who are
having difficulties.
All of us were required to report on the fifth day, our supervisor gave us some ideas, so all of us
went home in high spirits.
DAY 5
REPORTING AND FINANCIAL STATEMENT

On the fifth and last day of our work immersion, we had to prove our worth, of course I was
nervous, my hands were shaking and I just couldn’t find a way to console myself, everything can
happen on the last day so I arrived there earlier than my colleagues, I always made sure that I
was the first one, I was thinking of what I should say when the my time comes, I was preparing
myself for the final showdown.
The next person who showed up in the office was ma’am Divane, our supervisor, she told me to
come with her to eat, it’s her treat and I have no reason to say no, so I came with her, after eating
she told me to encode some things for the financial statement of Century High for the month of
October, I noticed that there were things I failed to balance and there was a remaining 0.01 at my
net income, so instead of doing the whole thing again, our benevolent supervisor helped me with
my problem, and then after that my colleagues arrived finally, those who left the work unfinished
had to finish it that day, for us, we talked about our reports and how we’re going to execute it.
We began reporting at 10:30 a.m. we reported our statement of financial income to the boss,
reporting is not that easy you know, especially if you got nervous as heck, like me, I was really
nervous and a bit scared at the same time but thank god it turned out to be a huge success. I felt
sad when our work immersion ended, it kind of felt like left a hole in my chest cause, not gonna
lie I was having a lot of fun. Being with our amazing supervisor, was fun, she made our work
more like of a playground than an actual work wherein you get pressured. I learned that you
shouldn’t stress yourself out when it comes to work, if you truly love what you’re doing, be
compassionate and just enjoy it.
When it was my turn to report, it felt like as if time has slowed down, all my hard work turned
out to be a huge success, our work immersion has finally come to an end, those five days we
spent in the office felt like we were working for months.
We celebrated our victory and success, our supervisor handed us our grades to see how well we
did, she also asked all the things we’ve learned during our work immersion, she somehow hoped
that one of us would apply to SMI and work alongside them which I think is not a bad idea.
They also did an interview for each of us, I was quite frankly with them, I didn’t feel nervous
during the interview, after all of that the photographer took pictures of us with our supervisor and
the other staffs.
We celebrated our success at a fast food restaurant, we were not only celebrating our huge
success but also the birth of the best supervisor ever, yes, it was her birthday, we spent our time
chatting and eating, we parted ways after that and I can’t forget the look on their faces, we all felt
sad and happy at the same time.
I was just glad that it was over, I learned so much and I will treasure them for as long as I live.
