1.0 Scope Visual method of testing for surface irregularities in steel casting.
4.0 Equipment
When direct inspection is employed it shall be performed when access is sufficient to place the eye within 24” of
the surface to be examined and at an angle not less than 30° to the surface to be examined.
Mirrors shall be used, when deemed necessary to improve the angle of vision, and aids such as a magnifying
lens may be used to assist examinations
Illumination from sun light or artificial source must provide luminescence of 1000 lx on testing surface . This
needs to be verified by white lx meter. Lux meter needs to calibrated once every year or after service/repairing.
If the area of inspection is inaccessible for direct technique we will cover visual inspection with our video-
borescope.
For hydraulic passage inspection we have implemented glass fittings at different angles along with artificial
lighting to check surface discontinuities .
All surface to be inspected in respect with ANSI MSS SP 55, which categories all irregularities/discontinuity in
twelve terminology. All discontinuity to be compared as per Table 1of ANSI MSS SP 55 & reference photographs.
