PROPER SUBSETS

If S is a subset of T but is not


equal to T, we say that S is a
proper subset of T.
Notation: S ⊂ T
Examples :
1. {2, 9} ⊂ B
2. {1, 3, 5, 7, 9...} ⊂ N
3. {dog, cat} ⊄ D
*The last example illustrates this
basic fact:
No set is a proper subset of itself

Again,S is a proper subset of T if and only


if S is not equal to T.
IMPROPER SUBSETS
If S is a subset of T and is
equal to T, we say that S is
an improper subset of T.
Notation: S ⊆ T

A subset which contains all the elements


of the original set is called an improper
subset. Basically, the improper set
includes the null set and the original set
itself.
Examples :

Set P ={2,4,6} :
{} ⊆ P and {2,4,6} ⊆ P
* P is equal to {2,4,6}

Again,S is an improper subset of T if and


only if S is equal to T.
Quick activity
Give a proper and improper subset of the
following events . Write your answer in a
proper notation or symbol. Use your
notebook :
1. A = { 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5 }
2. B = { 2, 4, 6, 8 }
3. C = { ban , ben , bin }
4. D = { a , m , y }
5. E = { monday , tuesday , wwednesday }

Other type of set : Universal Set
Universal set is set which
contains all object,
including itself.
e.g. : the set of real number would be the
universal set of all other sets of number.
NOTE : except negative roots
Another Example :

All the elements inside the box is an


elements of the universal set. Set E is a
universal set.
Another Example :
Given : U = { 1, 2, 3, 4 , 5, 6, 7,8 ,9, 10 }
A = { 1 , 2, 4, 5, }
B = { 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 }

U is the universal set. A is a proper


subset of B. U is an improper subset of
{ 1, 2, 3, 4 , 5, 6, 7,8 ,9, 10 }.

1. UNION OF SETS : the union of two
sets A and B is the set C which consist
of all those element which are either
in A or B or in both. Notation : A U B

1. SET OF INTERSECTION : it is where two
sets intersect. Notation : A ∩ B
Set of intersection
contains the
elements that are
present in both A
and B.

1. COMPLEMENT OF SET : Let U = { 1, 2, 3, }
now the set of all those
element of U which doesn't belongs to A
will be called as A compliment.

portion is the
complement of
A.

compliment in the
universal set.
